The Workhouse Military in the Arts Initiative (WMAI) Artist in Residence Program is a core part of the historic Workhouse Arts Center in the greater Washington DC area. The 60+ artists at Workhouse comprise several groups: Studio Artists, who sublease one of 60 studios on campus; Arches Gallery Artists, associate artists who pay pay a fee to exhibit and operate on campus; and Emerging Artists and Resident Artists, who sublease studios in the Glass and Ceramics programs.
This application is for WMAI Artist in Residence applications. The residency lasts a term of two years, from July 1, 2023, to June 30, 2025.
ENTRY GUIDELINES
This open call facilitates submissions from parties interested in becoming the WMAI Artist in Residence. Selections will be made based on images and information submitted on the entry form. Jurors are not required to provide feedback.

Please Note: All applicants must be prepared to interview with staff/jurors via Zoom if their juror ratings are high enough. Applications are rated on composition, concept, technical skill, originality, and professional practices.
WMAI Artist in Residence (AIR) Expectations and Responsibilities:
PERSONAL
Construct a body of work to be exhibited at the conclusion of the year-long residency. The total body of work should be cohesive and include a supportive artist statement. Help install and deinstall the exhibition and deliver an artist talk at the reception.
SUPPORT THE WMAI
Workhouse Arts Center promotes WMAI through social media pushes and activity announcements where appropriate. The AIR will support these social media initiatives, and act as a liason between the Workhouse and all parties that may be involved in the program. Other support can include attending various meetings and conferences dedicated to promoting and programming Military in the Arts activities; helping identify and gather research for grants related to the program goals; distributing surveys to workshop participants assessing workshop strengths and weaknesses, etc.
EDUCATIONAL
Work and coordinate with the Workhouse Education Program to provide artistic workshops through the WMAI Program open to all Military branches and their families. Currently, the AIR is responsible for teaching one Veteran Open Studio (VOS) per month. VOS occurs on Saturdays, 12 - 3pm.
ABOUT WMAI FACILITIES
Studio facilities include wi-fi, kitchens, and bathrooms in each building. Studio Artists share sinks in the back of each building. Each building acts as a community within a community, maintaining a gallery. The AIR studio is approximately 215 sq ft (approx. $408/month) and is fully funded by the WMAI program. Studio rent includes heat/AC, water, historical brick walls, large historical windows, fluorescent lighting, hanging tracks and free internet WiFi. Artists have 24-hour access, sales support (with 30% commission retained by WAF), marketing assistance, exhibition opportunities, and free parking.
SELECTION
All artists are juried into the program. The Workhouse selects artists that:
- Are innovative in production and concept, culturally relative, and demonstrate a technical mastery of a media.
- Show a commitment to their artistic career through an existing body of work.
- Create all original art and concepts.

At least 5 full-size images of artwork, maximum 10 full-size images. The images must be professional quality JPEG images in 2400 x 3000 pixels. Images must be smaller than 5MB.
TERMS OF ENTRY
Photography and Permissions: The artist verifies he/she/they own(s) or has copyright(s) to the artwork being submitted and therefore allows Workhouse Arts Center to display the artwork in its galleries. If accepted, the artist provides approval to Workhouse Arts Center to photograph or use submitted photographs of the artwork for advertising, educational or archival purposes online and in print without monetary compensation. Images of artwork may be cropped to fit advertisements and credits will be included when possible.
Sales: A 30% commission on sales will be taken by Workhouse Arts Center. The artist must provide a federal W-9 tax form to receive their 70%.
