Cadet Program Eligibility and Requirements
Age and Certification: Applicants must be at least 16 years of age at the time of application. Applicants must be either currently enrolled in or have successfully completed an approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification program conducted in-person within the State of New Jersey or hold a valid National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) certification. Additionally, applicants must be either currently enrolled in or hold a current CPR certification for Healthcare Providers from either the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association.
Residency: Your primary residence must be within 5 miles of the squad. Our squad is located at 2 Mt. Lucas Road, Princeton NJ 08542.
Service Commitment: If accepted, cadets must commit to serving as an active member for two years starting from the date they turn 18 years old to be eligible for reimbursement of EMT training expenses, up to $2,000. Please note that PFARS does not pay for EMT classes upfront; reimbursement is provided upon completion of the required service period.
Operational Requirements for Cadets:
Monthly Service Hours: Cadets are required to complete a minimum of 16 hours of ride time per month, except during periods when they are enrolled in EMT classes.
Shift Restrictions: Cadet shifts cannot exceed 8 hours per day and must end by 10:00 PM (2200). Cadets are not permitted to be at PFARS for more than 40 hours a week or more than 6 consecutive days. This includes all activities such as meetings, drills, calls, classes, and scheduled shifts.
Supervision and Safety: Cadets cannot be left alone at the PFARS building. It is crucial that parents or guardians ensure prompt pickup at the end of each shift.
Approved Shift Times: Shifts for cadets are scheduled as follows:
Morning Shift: 0700-1500
Afternoon Shift: 1500-1900 (or 1530 start on school days)
Evening Shift: 1900-2200
Parental Support:
Timely Pickup: For safety and compliance with operational policies, it is imperative that cadets are picked up promptly at the end of their shifts. Requests for pickup outside the approved shift times will be denied.
Application Integrity: The application must be filled out exclusively by the applicant, using their own direct contact information. Submissions completed on behalf of the applicant by another party will not be accepted and will result in immediate disqualification.
