Tips for Assisting an Umpire Who is Facing Challenges from other Game Participants:
Should you feel comfortable to do so, or if an umpire requests your assistance, you may elevate your support by following these steps when supporting an Umpire who is facing challenges from another Game Participant:
- Approach the Game Participant in a respectful and professional manner: Start the conversation in a respectful and professional manner, addressing the Game Participant by their proper title and introducing yourself if necessary.
- Explain the situation: Briefly describe your view of the situation and the concerns you have about the umpire's well-being.
- Ask for their support: Remind the Game Participant of the terms of this agreement and ask the Game Participant if they would be willing to support the Umpire and help resolve the issue.
- Provide suggestions: Offer some suggestions on how the Game Participant can remedy or calm the situation, such as speaking to an offending party directly or providing a reminder of this Pilot Project.
- Express gratitude: Thank the Game Participant for considering your suggestions, and let them know that you appreciate their support of the Softball BC Communication and Culture Pilot Project.
