ABOUT AUSTEN'S AUTISTIC ADVENTURES
Austen’s Autistic Adventures (“AAA”) provides real world activities for those 16 and older to maintain and improve social skills. By going out frequently into the community, the public gets to truly know people on the spectrum and vice versa. As members interact with others, real friendships are formed, family life improves, and more fulfilling jobs and volunteer opportunities are possible.
Acceptance is harder than awareness, for both neurodiverse and neurotypical people. Acceptance is unlikely to happen unless these two communities are frequently integrated. Therefore, “events” are offered every Monday through Friday, usually from 1:30-3:30. Our members do things like swim, bowl, fly kites, play board games, go to museums, and more.
In addition to “just for fun” events, AAA offers a variety of classes. All of our courses are taught by professionals in their respective fields who share their talents and time with members. Classes include bi-monthly life-skills cooking, Spanish, acting, improv, science, and etiquette.
AAA was founded in 2017 by one parent with a fervent need to provide opportunities for her adult child. Every person deserves community, friendship, and meaningful work. Neurotypical people find these opportunities in higher education and places of employment. For adults with autism, those opportunities disappear when public education services cease.
Small but mighty, Jamie and Lisa Christian (Vice President) interview each potential member and over time come to know their talents, interests and needs. Taking all factors into consideration when planning our monthly events creates unique opportunities for our members as a whole.
