    Travie

  • Image-39
  • Travis ("Travie") has been drawing since he could hold a crayon!

Our "Art Enrichment Program" meets once or twice monthly where local artists share their talents with our ASD members.

Our most prolific artist, Travie’s work has a whimsical, folk art style that resonates with viewers. Travie has a deep love for animals in particular and has been commissioned dozens of times by people who want their own pet portraits. Travie has a gift for capturing each animal’s unique personality.

Travie is a sweet, kind, and loving guy who adores his girlfriend, Austen, his family, music, acting, basketball, and life!

    JUSTIN
  • Image-57
  • Justin began drawing at a very young age and has always had a keen eye for detail and dimension.

Non-verbal until age seven, and still a man of few words, Justin's prefers to be left alone to draw. He is rarely without his sketchbook; his favorite subjects are Disney characters and robots, often "morphing" the two.

Justin's favorite event with Austen's Autistic Adventures is any event involving "Swimming". Luckily we have access to many community pools both indoor and outdoor for him and his friends to enjoy!

Justin lives with his mom (and the Vice President of Austen's Autistic Adventures), dad, and his dog, Aggie Rose.

    AUSTEN
  • Image-61
  • Austen loves all things art and is rarely without a marker or pen in hand. Austen, as she will readily tell you, has a huge imagination. Her drawings are innocent, childlike, and full of love. Working with our professional instructors, Austen has been able to grow as a creative person.

Austen is our "Ambassador of Autism" and is the first one to welcome new members to our events. She loves meeting with her friends no matter which activity we are doing.

Austen lives with her mom, Jamie (President of Austen's Autistic Adventures), her dog, Hadley, and four cats.

  • "BINGO!"

    Logan
  • Image-65
  • Logan is one of the "founding" members of Austen's Autistic Adventures! His mom, Justine, is our board secretary.

Although Logan is low verbal, our events give him the opportunity to "find his voice". You will always see Logan at our "BINGO" event currently held monthly via zoom.

Ian will greet everyone with "Hi. How are you? I am good!" He loves our swimming events and our Martial Arts Class as well as bowling.

Ian's verbal skills have come a long way and his interaction with us has become more purposeful over time. Building social skills while having fun with your friends is the backbone of our organization!

    EBENEZER "Ebby"
  • Image-79
  • Ebenezer ("Ebby") came to us from California two years ago. His mother, Pamela, was very worried about leaving the social service her son enjoyed on the West Coast and overjoyed to find our program.

Like many of our other members, Ebby has low verbal ability but a BIG personality! He enjoys anything tactile and art days are among his favorite activities with our group.

Since being immersed in our programs, Ebby has become more socially appropriate and is learning skills through art, especially, about patience and listening, and working through sensory issues.

He's our "go to guy" for Trivia and an excellent bowler!

    ANIYAH
  • Image-90
  • Aniyah is a very dedicated young lady who takes her job working at Love Field seriously. However, a couple times a week her schedule allows her to join our social events here at Austen's Autistic Adventures. One of her favorites is our "Dance Party" event.

Each month we have a different "theme party" where we dance, socialize and play fun party games. Aniyah is a great dancer and a very competitive game player!

  • "You're on mute..."

    Matthew
  • Image-98
  • Matthew is a soft spoken young man who enjoys literally every event he attends with Austen's Autistic Adventures.

Perhaps the nicest thing about Matthew is his willingness to learn.

Matthew lives quite far from most of our events, but he is a constant particpant in our "virtual events" like "BINGO" and "Speedy Games" and many of our "hybrid events" like "Yoga". He also loves to attend in person with his friends when he can!

    DYLAN W
  • Image-112
  • Dylan has a few words, but mostly uses American Sign Language to communicate.

While Dylan has quite a number of physical limitations, his spirit is boundless.

Always happy to see his friends (and to see a pretty girl!), Dylan loves to participate in any event, but our "Halloween Party" is probably his favorite. He absolutly loves dressing up in costume.

    Harry
  • Image-109
  • Meet Harry, the very first member of Austen's Autistic Adventures (other than Austen herself!) Harry is completely nonverbal but he can easily communicate his wants and needs.

When Harry first began taking art lessons, he wanted his aide, or his instructor, to basically do the work for him. But after a lot of hard work, Harry is now painting solo and having a great time.

In addition to Art class, Harry enjoys our monthly visit to the Trampoline Park and playing Dominos at "Board Games".

    MATT
  • Image-127
  • Matt is another longtime member of Austen's Autistic Adventures. While Matt does speak, he is often very quiet and sometimes difficult to understand. Despite this obstacle, Matt thoroughly enjoys being with his friends.

A fan of superheroes, movies, and rock and roll, Matt's communication improves when he can speak about his favorite subjects. We try to accommodate our members' spcial interests while expanding their world and giving them opportunities to experience new things.

  • "Do you know what?"

    DYLAN B
  • Image-146
  • Dylan B has two passions in his life: art and animals. A big fan of history museums in particular, Dylan can talk endlessly about different periods and genres.

While these are his main loves, Dylan still struggles to communicate at times and has anxiety issues when away from the familiar.

But he keeps trying and the frequency of our program allows for many opportunities.

  • "You guys are my best friends!"

    AUSTIN
  • Image-149
  • Austin is an amazing kid who has a love of all things creative. While his passion is music, Austin has a gift for all kinds of creative endeavors.

A couple years ago, Austin and his family moved to New Mexico with the hopes of Austin attending college there. Unfortunately, it has not worked out and the he has returned to North Texas,

One of the primary reasons for their move back to Texas is so that Austin can once again attend the program of Austen's Autistic Adventures. He is excited to be a part of the group once again.

Austin loves everything Austen's Autistic Adventures offers, and is a true friend to everyone he meets.

  • ABOUT AUSTEN'S AUTISTIC ADVENTURES

Austen’s Autistic Adventures (“AAA”) provides real world activities for those 16 and older to maintain and improve social skills. By going out frequently into the community, the public gets to truly know people on the spectrum and vice versa. As members interact with others, real friendships are formed, family life improves, and more fulfilling jobs and volunteer opportunities are possible.

Acceptance is harder than awareness, for both neurodiverse and neurotypical people. Acceptance is unlikely to happen unless these two communities are frequently integrated. Therefore, “events” are offered every Monday through Friday, usually from 1:30-3:30. Our members do things like swim, bowl, fly kites, play board games, go to museums, and more.

In addition to “just for fun” events, AAA offers a variety of classes. All of our courses are taught by professionals in their respective fields who share their talents and time with members. Classes include bi-monthly life-skills cooking,  Spanish, acting, improv, science, and etiquette.

AAA was founded in 2017 by one parent with a fervent need to provide opportunities for her adult child. Every person deserves community, friendship, and meaningful work. Neurotypical people find these opportunities in higher education and places of employment. For adults with autism, those opportunities disappear when public education services cease.

Small but mighty, Jamie and Lisa Christian (Vice President) interview each potential member and over time come to know their talents, interests and needs. Taking all factors into consideration when planning our monthly events creates unique opportunities for our members as a whole.
