Thank you for your interest in joining your Community Education Council (CEC) as a Borough President designee! The CECs are one of our most local levels of government, and help to provide parents with a voice to shape education policy decisions at the district level. The Borough President is looking for partners to help ensure every school is excellent, and that students across the borough are supported and allowed to thrive.
There are 6 CECs in Manhattan, one for each community education district under the jurisdiction of a community superintendent. Each CEC is composed of 11 voting members, 9 elected parents of students in grades K-8 at the time they run for election, and 2 members appointed by the Borough President.
Who is eligible to apply: Borough President appointees must be residents of the district, or own or operate a business in the district where they seek to serve on the CEC, and have extensive business, trade, or education experience and knowledge.
Who is not eligible to apply: NYS Education Law and Chancellor's Regulations prohibit certain individuals from serving on a CEC. The complete list is found in Chancellor's Regulations D-140.
UPDATE: The deadline for applications has been extended to June 9, 2023 at 5pm.
