Excellent – Management was transparent, and we had regular meetings, informative emails and other ways to receive current information.
Good – but there could be some improvement – sometimes we heard about things “after the fact.”
Poor – It depended on who your supervisor was and what they thought was important enough to tell us.
Non-existent – I never received information about the City, my department, or even feedback about my performance.
How well did your department exercise collaboration with other departments and external organizations?

Extremely well-it was critical to the success of our operations and we felt supported by others in reaching our goals.
Good – We didn’t always have opportunities to collaborate but when we did, it was a productive experience.
Not So Much – We managed to be successful without assistance from others.

Did you feel supported by your supervisor and given the tools and resources that would allow you to succeed?

Absolutely – my supervisor believed that my success was their success and gave me the autonomy to perform my job to the best of my abilities.
Somewhat – I was able to grow in my role but sometimes it was a challenge to get things “right.”
Not Really – I don’t feel like I knew the expectations of my supervisor and that it was a moving target to be successful.
Not At All – my supervisor and I didn’t see eye-to-eye on anything and they were rarely available to assist me with questions, explanations, guidance, feedback, etc.
How did you feel about the training opportunities provided to you during your employment?

The City has a great training program and I was able to participate in things that would help me grow in my career.
The City’s course offerings were good, but my department didn’t always support my attendance.
The City of Newport News could offer more career path courses as well as class times that coincide with our work schedules.
I was not allowed to participate in any training during my employment.

Management made sure everyone knew they would be supported, allowed employees to report problems to them, and issues were generally resolved in a timely manner.
Operational problems could be reported, but employee issues were never addressed.
Reporting a concern was generally held against employees.
It felt like reporting an issue was a waste of time.

Tell us how familiar you were with the Human Resources Department’s functions and how satisfied you were with the programs, support and assistance provided.

Human Resources was a great resource to assist me with questions and resolution to issues.
My department had a Human Resources person/team so I only connected with them.
I was familiar but chose not to contact Human Resources.
I wasn’t aware of the functions of the department and didn’t know who to contact.
I used Human Resources in the past, however had a negative experience and did not utilize them again.

The City is a great place to work, they value their employees and you can build a purposeful career!
The City is a good organization that tries to meet the needs of citizens.
Working for the City is ok but there are opportunities for improvement and if you get a job there, maybe you can help make a change.
Don’t even think about working for the City of Newport News – you will regret it!
