Curved-back seats had either 10 or 11 pleats per seat back. Straight-backed seats had either 9 or 10 pleats. The generally accepted guideline is that earlier seats were curved and had 11 pleats/flutes per seat; later seats were flat and had 10 pleats/flutes per seat. This change occurred in December 1953 at 661152 (RHD) and 674434 (LHD), but these details are never absolute.

These are not interchangeable as the seat frames differ. Cars with arched backs have two distinct “pockets” for the occupants’ backs and a noticeable bulge where the backs meet the center console. Straight seat backs are just that, with no scallop or pocket, and no bulge at the center console.
