About Street Trees in San Francisco

Street trees are public infrastructure and a vital part of our city. In 2016, San Francisco voters passed Proposition E, transferring full responsibility for street trees from property owners to the city. SF Public Works now manages all maintenance, pruning, and sidewalk repairs. As an authorized city partner, Friends of the Urban Forest is permitted to plant trees in any valid public right-of-way — including sidewalks adjacent to private properties — without property owner permission.

    Common Questions:

    Who maintains street trees?

FUF cares for new trees during their first three years. After that, SF Public Works takes over all maintenance, pruning, and sidewalk repair at no cost to property owners.

Will roots damage my sewer line or sidewalk?

Well-maintained sewer laterals are unlikely to be affected. If a street tree ever causes sidewalk damage, the city is responsible for repairs under Prop E — not you.

Can a tree block my view or light?

Trees are selected with mature size in mind and pruned regularly by the city for visibility, clearance, and safety. Let us know if you would like to be apart of species selection.

What about dog waste and tree basins?

Basins are mulched and low-maintenance. Residents are welcome to plant small native flowers, add protective rails, or post signage to keep the basin clean and welcoming.

    What about underground utilities?

All utilities are located and marked before planting. Please do not remove or interfere with any sidewalk markings — they are essential to safe planting.
