Please read the following workshop descriptions and let us know which workshops interest you most.
  • From Pen to Power

This workshop will encourage writers to explore their relationship with feminism through creative writing.  Each writer will walk away having crafted a flash fiction piece or a poem responding to feminist ideas.

Navigating Activism and Democracy through Feeling

Activism and democracy are all about voicing thoughts and attitudes toward issues. Our choice to advocate on behalf of anything is a direct result of our feelings or attitude toward it. This workshop will use poetry as a way to celebrate and navigate these thoughts and feelings.

    Politics of Poetry

As Ngugi wa Thing’o wrote, “Let our pens be the voices of the people.” In this workshop, we will learn how to write poetry that addresses social issues and calls others to action, engaging with the communities that matter.

    What’s The Scoop?

Students will gain confidence as a journalist and be introduced to best ethical practices and how to conduct an interview.

    Things Are Like Other Things

This workshop centers around how to use similes, metaphors, and allegories to present political issues in writing, ranging from glaringly obvious metaphors to subtle allegories.

Ordered Worlds: Dystopian and Utopian Fiction

Dystopia and utopia are foils for our world. How can we use this fantastical genre to comment on the problems we see in our own lives? In this workshop, each writer will develop their own dystopian story.

    Times Are Changing

Our democracy is constantly evolving. In this workshop, writers will look at creative nonfiction pieces centered around current events and produce a piece about something happening right now that is close to their hearts.

  • Workshop Selection

We'll do our best to assign you to at least one (and preferably two) of your three top-choice workshops.
