The Maui Hotel & Lodging Association (MHLA) scholarship program is designed to promote hospitality and culinary arts as a career and profession in Hawaii. The awards provide financial assistance to students who are currently attending the University of Hawaii Maui College (UHMC) and have chosen a career path in the field of hospitality or culinary arts.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Selection of the MHLA scholarship winners is based on several factors, with special emphasis on individual character, personal merit, and background. Merit is demonstrated in a variety of ways: leadership in school, community, and extracurricular activities, academic achievement, and motivation to serve and succeed in all endeavors.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must
- Be enrolled as a student at UHMC (minimum of 9 credits)
- Be working toward an associate in applied science degree in Hospitality & Tourism or Culinary Arts
- Be a Permanent Hawaii resident or U.S. citizen.
- Have a minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale (official academic transcript must accompany the application
APPLICATION PROCEDURE: Applicants must submit the following
- A completed MHLA application form
- A personal statement that addresses the applicant’s educational and career goals, co-curricular activities, commitment to serving Hawaii and its people, and work experience
- One letter of recommendation attesting to the applicant’s character and potential
- A Resume, and
- An official academic transcript
APPLICATION DEADLINE:
Completed applications should be submitted online or handed to Lorelle Peros of the Business & Hospitality Department Chair or Craig Omori of the Culinary Arts Program Coordinator by April 17, 2025.
REDEEMING YOUR AWARD:
Students must use the scholarship funds to pay for tuition, books, and supplies at the University of Hawaii Maui College only. Scholarships may be redeemed by
- reimbursement to the student upon receiving receipt of payment of school expenses and proof of enrollment or
- paid directly to the school.
