Our next screening on Wednesday the 15th of May will be The Drover’s Wife, a tale of an unarmed woman’s survival amid the dangers of Outback life while her husband is away droving.
Originally a short story by Henry Lawson, Leah Purcell’s re-imagining – first as a stage play, then a novel, and now as a feature film – not only creates a powerful, original character for herself to play but gives the male-centred western genre an indigenous feminist slant. It’s a gift to see her at work in a role she knows inside out. An electrifying and ultimately harrowing window into of a woman’s plight in rural Australia in the 19th century, it’s also a not to be missed and moving story of resilience.
Wine will be served from 19:00 and the film will begin at 19.30.
