Our next screening on Wednesday 18 December will be The Holdovers by director Alexander Payne.
A throwback to the classic American cinema of the 1970s, Paul Giamatti stars as an authoritarian classics instructor at a boarding school. As a punishment for failing the privileged son of a senator, he is required to remain at the school over Christmas break and watch the students who have nowhere to go — the titular holdovers. Giamatti's co-star is debut film actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the last of the students left behind. Sessa follows the arc of his character from teenage troublemaker to tragic figure with a unique blend of
energy and endearment. But perhaps greater than either of these brilliant performances is Da Vine Joy Randolph as the school's cafeteria manager, whose son died in the Vietnam War. She spends much of the film as someone grieving for a loss she can't comprehend, but, unfortunately, understands all too fully.
Like finding an unwatched classic under the tree on Christmas morning, it's a Yuletide gift about finding family where you least expect it.
