SOLO MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP COMPETITION

RULES AND GUIDELINES

1. Online Registration Begins: April 1, 2026; Online Registration and Payment Deadline: April 15, 2026
2. Please go to www.mtaclacounty.org to register. Late and incomplete application will be denied.
3. The competitions are open to students of both active and provisional members in good standing of the Los Angeles County Branch. Contributory members are excluded from this competition.
4. Each teacher may submit a maximum of TWO students per age category, with the exception of the Voice and Winds divisions. Students must have studied at least six months with their current teacher before entering.
5. Applicants can participate in both Solo and Chamber Music Competition, however, applicants may not play the same piece in both competitions.
6. FIRST place winners are required to perform, and all prize winners MUST be present to receive their scholarships at the Awards Concert. Failure to appear will result in the forfeiture of the prize award.
7. There will be a GRAND prize awarded at the judges' discretion.  The winner will receive a $500 scholarship in addition to their first-place prize.
8. Previous first place winners must wait out one year before he or she can compete again in the same (if age qualified) or older age category.
9. Each contestant may enter in only one category per instrument. Students with suggested repertoire of CM Level 7 and higher are encouraged to apply.
10. Each application will be accompanied by a non-refundable entrance fee. The student’s age, as of the competition date May 2nd, 2026 will determine the appropriate category for entry. A copy of a birth certificate or passport is required to submit online with the application.
11. Voice and Winds contestants will be judged together under two age categories: age 14-18, Category VW I; and age 13 & under, Category VW II.
12. Time Limit for Piano and Strings: EIGHT minutes for Category III & IV, TEN minutes for Category I & II; Time Limit for Voice and Winds: EIGHT minutes for Category II, TEN minutes for Category I. All music must be memorized. Repertoire listed on the application must be performed and cannot be changed.
13. Contestants will provide their own accompanist at their own expense.
14. Competition schedules will be given to teachers by April 25th, 2026.
15. Students are expected to arrive at least 15 minutes in advance of their scheduled audition time. Each performer must bring scores of all repertoire played for the judges' reference.
16. The competition will be strictly a close-door audition, "private with no audience". Any personal communication with the judges from students, parents, or teachers, will result in the contestant's disqualification.
17. Judges may stop the audition at their discretion within the time limit. This will not affect the contestant's score.
18. Honorable mentions may be awarded at judges’ discretion and judges’ decisions are final. There will be NO Ties. Teachers of winning students will be notified by email within 24 hours.

VW I: Age 14-18 ; Time Limit: 10 Minutes ; Fee $45

VW II: Age 13 & under ; Time Limit: 8 minutes ; Fee $40

 

Piano and Strings Categories:

I: Age 16-18 ; Time Limit: 10 Minutes ; Fee $45

II. Age 13-15 ; Time Limit: 10 Minutes ; Fee $45

III. Age 10-12 ; Time Limit: 8 Minutes ; Fee $40

IV. Age 9 & under ; Time Limit : 8 minutes ; Fee $40

Piano Repertoire: Two selections are required. One piece must be from the Baroque or Classical Period (1650 -1820) and the other one from the Romantic/ Contemporary Period (1820 – Present). Concerto or transcriptions are not acceptable.
