Full Release & Waiver of Liability Agreement for City of Bartlett, Singleton Community Center, Memphis Kendo and Iaido Club, the Houston Kenshikan, Cougar Kendo, the Southern U.S. Kendo and Iaido Federation and the All U.S. Kendo Federation.
I/We fully understand and acknowledge that:
While Kendo, Iaido and related activities are some of the safest martial arts presently practiced, as with any athletic endeavor or sport, there is the risk of injury. Further, while the Instructors and Seniors providing guidance will always endeavor to provide the safest instruction possible, there is always the possibility of misunderstandings and miscommunication that could result in injury. It is highly recommended that you consult with your physician prior to initiating practice to ensure that you are healthy enough to participate in the activity.

Further, I hereby agree to abide by the commands and instructions of the Instructors, officials, Officers, and Staff, and I understand that their decisions regarding all issues
involved in the practice of the martial arts and associated activities are final and binding on me.

I also understand that here may be other risks not known nor reasonably forseeable at this time, and I undertake the practice Kendo, Iaido and related activities with this clear understanding.

By signing this form, I am representing I am a member of good standing with the All United States Kendo Federation, my regional federation, and my Dojo.
I accept and assume such risks and responsibility for the losses and/or damages following any injury, disability, paralysis or death, however caused and whether caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the Releasees named herein.

Aggressor, Age disparity, Imbalance of power, Intellectual capabilities

Touching and nontouching offenses
Nontouching: discussing sex, showing porn, sending sexually explicit messages

Sexual Abuse Facts
Victims know their abusers over 90% of the time
Criminal background checks only ID people with a record
Less than 10% are caught or prosecuted
Offenders are highly qualified, intelligent, patient, good interpersonal skills, positive self image
Red flags: groom or prepare their victim with attention, affection and gifts

Grooming
Stages: Targeting a victim, gaining trust, recognizing and fulfilling needs, isolating the victim, sexualizing the relationship, maintaining control
1 Targeting: looking for a vulnerability
2 Gaining trust: trust is automatic to victim and those around the victim
3 Recognizing and fulfilling needs: attention, positive reinforcement, helping them in different ways
4 Isolating the victim: told there is a special relationship, told some secrets, offender is the only one who understands them, offender finds way to separate victim from others
5 Sexualizing the relationship: accomplished after breaking down of psychological and physical barriers, like accidental showing nudity, showing porn, touching the victim
6 Control: maintain secrecy

Minimizing Sexual Misconduct
Abuse may occur in common areas: locker rooms, bathrooms, unmonitored areas, unsupervised contact at a residence, social events involving alcohol, events, overnight travel
Private meeting: have the door open/visible to others, have a witness
Do not assume everyone you meet is a good person
Use the buddy system at events
Don’t drink alcohol to the point you cannot think before you say or act

Changing Clothes
Always have 2 adults with a minor, even when adjusting a minor’s uniform
Adults change separately from minors

Authority
Seniors do not do anything that could be an abuse of power/taking advantage of a junior.
Sexual relationship between adults may be legal, but may be inappropriate Relationship may impact entire Dojo
Inform Sensei & Dojo officers of relationship
Any issues may result in expulsion from the Seminar

Consequences
Criminal & Civil liability for the Offender
Civil liability for the Dojo
The Dojo may not survive: members will quit, we lose our facility
