  • AASECT Continuing Education Provider Application

    An AASECT Continuing Education (CE) Provider is an individual or organization, approved by AASECT and committed to providing education that meets AASECT standards for helping individuals earn or maintain their AASECT Certification credential. AASECT CE Providers are responsible for properly representing all AASECT guidelines, procedures, and standards. Individuals and organizations may become AASECT Continuing Education (CE) Providers. There are three types of AASECT CE Providers. The table below lists these categories and the fees associated with each. Provider categories are defined below the table.

  • Provider Categories and Fees

    Individual Provider $ 300 / two years
    Organizational I Provider $ 500 / two years
    Organizational II Provider $ 2,000 / two years 

    ($200 of the total fee is a non-refundable processing fee.)

     

     

    Individual Provider

     

    An Individual Provider must be an AASECT Certified Member and must present at least 80% of the training of each event. There is no limit to the number of CE credits you can offer.  (Note: if you are presenting your training with a partner who is presenting more than 20% of the total material, you must apply to be an Organizational Provider.)  

     

     

     

    Organizational Provider I

    An individual, group of individuals, private training center, school, accredited university/college, or other organization. Organizational Providers must have an AASECT Certified Member overseeing the planning of all training. The Organizational Provider I offers 40 or fewer AASECT CE credits per year and utilizes more than one expert to deliver the training.

    Organizational Provider II

    An individual, group of individuals, private training center, school, accredited university/college, or other organization. Organizational Providers must have an AASECT Certified Member overseeing the planning of all training. The Organizational Provider II offers more than 40 AASECT CE credits per year and utilizes more than one expert to deliver the training.

     

     

  • Payment

    Once you submit your application, an invoice will be sent via email and you will be able to pay online.

  • Provider Responsibilities and Privileges

    Approved AASECT CE Providers must maintain documentation of programs offered, including program objectives, syllabi/ outlines, evaluations, and rosters, for seven years. This seven-year requirement aligns with the AASECT Code of Ethics. Further, it aligns with AASECT’s members’ needs, i.e. CE credits may be applied towards members’ certification renewals for up to five years after earning them. AASECT may conduct periodic reviews of Approved Providers’ documents, as part of a process of evaluating training.

    If this application is complete, it will be reviewed upon receipt. If it is not complete, the AASECT Office and/or the CE Committee will contact applicant to request more information. Expect at least 4 weeks for review.

    Upon approval of application, applicant will be sent a personalized template of a Certificate of CE credits and an AASECT web posting form.  If you would like to publish the event on the calendar of events on the AASECT website, please complete and provide the AASECT web posting form to ce@aasect.org.

    It is the responsibility of attendees to determine if their state licensing board will accept AASECT CE credits.

    Please attach a list of your learning objectives in SMART goal format, including which Core Knowledge or Skills Training areas each objective will cover. For help on categories, please see this short video: Understanding AASECT Categories.

  • AASECT Categories for Events

    AASECT recognizes Core Knowledge Areas (CKAs), Skills Training, and Values and Attitudes Training (SAR). Core Knowledge is general information about a topic. Skills Training is how to apply knowledge about a topic to the participants' work. For more information on how to choose the categories, please see our Understanding AASECT Categories brief video.

    To indicate how the content of your training meets AASECT certification requirements, state which of the below your training addresses by including the CKA, Skills Training, or SAR next to each learning objective you are providing in this application.  For example: "Students will be able to list the three main sections under Principle One of AASECT's Code of Conduct. CKA(a)."  

     

    Core Knowledge Areas (CKA)

    a. Ethics and ethical behavior.

    b. Developmental sexuality from a bio-psycho-social perspective across the life course.

    c. Socio-cultural, familial factors (e.g., ethnicity, culture, religion, spirituality, socioeconomic status, family values) in relation to sexual values and behaviors.

    d. Issues related to sexual orientation and/or gender identity: heterosexuality; issues and themes impacting lesbian, gay, bisexual, pansexual, asexual people; gender identity and expression.

    e. Intimacy skills (e.g., social, emotional, sexual), intimate relationships, interpersonal relationships and family dynamics.

    f. Diversities in sexual expression and lifestyles including, but not limited to, polyamory, swinging, BDSM and tantra.

    g. Sexual and reproductive anatomy/physiology.

    h. Health/medical factors that may influence sexuality including, but not limited to, illness, disability, drugs, mental health, conception, pregnancy, childbirth, pregnancy termination, contraception, fertility, HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted infection, other infections, sexual trauma, injury and safer sex practices.

    i. Range of sexual functioning and behavior, from optimal to problematic including, but not limited to, common issues such as: desire discrepancy, lack of desire, difficulty achieving or maintaining arousal, sexual pain, penetration problems and difficulty with orgasm.

    j. Sexual exploitation including sexual abuse, sexual harassment and sexual assault.

    k. Cyber sexuality and social media.

    l. Substance use/abuse and sexuality.

    m. Pleasure enhancement skills.

    n. Learning theory and its application.

    o. Professional communication and personal reflection skills.

    p. History of the discipline of sex research, theory, education, counseling and therapy


    q. Principles of sexuality research and research methods.

     

    Sexuality Education (SE) Skills Training

    a. Theory and methods of general education (including curriculum development, delivery, and evaluation

    b. Theory and methods of sexuality education. 

    c. Ethical issues in sexuality education.

    e. Approaches to sexuality education delivery (e.g., small group work, one-on-one education, small groups, technological delivery, etc

     

    Sexuality Counseling (SC) Skills Training

    a. Theory and methods of personal/individual counseling.

    b. Theory and methods of sexuality counseling approaches to specific populations 

    c. Theory and methods of different approaches to intervention in relationship systems.

    d. Theory and methods of decision-making concerning sexually-related medical interventions.

    e. Ethical issues in sexuality counseling.

    f. Theory and practice of consultation, collaboration, and referral.

     

    Sex Therapy (ST) Skills Training

    a. Theory and methods of sex-related psychotherapy, including several different models.

    b. Techniques of sex-related assessment and diagnosis of the 'Psychosexual Disorders' described in the DSM.

    c. Theory and methods of approach to intervention in relationship systems experiencing sex and intimacy problems.

    d. Theory and methods of approach to medical intervention in the evaluation and treatment of psychosexual disorders.

    e. Principles of consultation, collaboration, and referral.

    f. Ethical decision-making and best practice.

    g. Exposure to treatment of clinical sex therapy cases through direct observation, demonstration, case review, or role-playing. eLearning cannot be applied.

    Please attach a copy of your grievance procedure. Include the steps taken if a participant submits a grievance.  As a last step, please include AASECT as a contact option, at ce@aasect.org.

  • 9. Provider Expectations  

    • Once an event has concluded, AASECT CE Providers must collect an evaluation from each attendee. Once the evaluation has been collected, the AASECT CE Provider may (or, is allowed to) send the attendee a PDF version of the CE Provider’s personalized AASECT CE Certificate.
    • AASECT CE Providers are not required to submit event information to AASECT until their required renewal (every 2 years).

  • 10. Advertising and CE Credits  

    When advertising your events, please use the following verbiage:  

    “This program meets the requirements of the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT) and is approved for ____ CE credits. These CE credits may be applied toward AASECT certification and renewal of certification.” 
    When calculating CE credits, please use the following information:  

    60 minutes = 1 CE credit or 90 minutes = 1.5 CE credits
    Each credit hour must have one learning objective
    Increments of 15 or 45 minutes are not permitted for 0.25 or 0.75 credits. For example, a segment scheduled for 1 hour 15 minutes will count as 1 credit; a segment scheduled for 1 hour 45 minutes will count as 1.5 credits.

    Please note, AASECT Certification is not automatic. In all cases, the Certification Committee determines whether AASECT certification is awarded.
