    Gareth Cumming Adventure Memorial Award

    Application Form
  • About the Award

The Gareth Cumming Memorial Adventure Award has been established to honour the memory of the late Gareth Cumming, a valued member and Trustee of the Brittle Bone Society (BBS). This annual award provides up to £1,000 to support one individual in pursuing a meaningful new experience or opportunity. The award aims to reflect Gareth’s belief that “nothing is impossible” and to help remove barriers that people with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) may face.

Who can apply for a grant?

To apply for the award, applicants must:

    • Have a confirmed diagnosis of Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI).
    • Be aged 18 or over at the time of application.
    • Be a resident of the United Kingdom or Ireland.
    • Be applying for an activity or experience that will directly benefit them.

Membership of the Brittle Bone Society is not required to apply, however we do encourage people to consider helping our charity through either Membership or Supporter status. You can find out more here.

    What the Award can Support

Applicants may request funding for activities that offer new opportunities, personal development, or confidence‑building experiences. Examples include:

    • Independent travel or visiting a new destination
    • Meeting new people or taking part in community or cultural activities
    • Training courses, workshops, or educational programmes
    • Activities that promote independence, learning, or personal growth
    • Pursue an ambition that feels out of reach due to financial or practical barriers.

If your idea doesn’t fit neatly into a category, that’s absolutely fine — the award is intentionally flexible to support a wide range of goals.

The award may be used to cover:

    • Travel costs (flights, train fares, mileage)
    • Accommodation
    • Activity or training fees

If the total cost of the activity exceeds £1,000, applicants may still apply. However, the award will only be released once the applicant has secured the remaining funds. These additional funds must be confirmed within three months of receiving a successful decision.

    Restrictions

    • The award cannot fund activities retrospectively.
    • For international travel, applicants must hold a valid passport and any required visas before funds can be released.
    • The grant must be used within two years of the award being confirmed.

    Application Process

    • Applicants must complete and submit the official application form.
    • Decisions will be made approximately one month after the closing date.
    • Successful applicants will be required to provide quotes or receipts for all costs.
    • Funds may be transferred directly to the applicant or paid to suppliers on their behalf.

    Reporting and Publicity Requirements

    The successful award recipient must:

    • Provide a short written biography and a summary of their experience once completed.
    • Share a small selection of images from their activity (where possible).
    • Allow the Brittle Bone Society to request permission to use this material on social media, the website, or other promotional platforms.
    • Attend the BBS Annual Conference for a presentation of the award (where feasible).
