The goal for the 2023 Summer Internship Program is to provide high quality internship opportunities to students, cultivating the talent pipeline to meet the needs of regional employers.
Here are a few frequently asked questions about the program:
What is my time commitment?
Students are required to work a minimum of 24 hours per week and no more than 32 hours per week. Students must work a minimum of 100 hours for the summer. Generally, students will work 8am-5pm Monday through Thursday with an hour lunch and attend a weekly debrief session on Fridays with us. You can be flexible with the schedule times as long as they meet the minimum hours requirement. We know you may have different business needs, so that is not a problem.
What is my financial commitment?
Students will be making a minimum of $12/hr. IALR has grant funding to cover half the stipend amount ($6/hr). The employer is responsible for their preferred pay rate minus $6/hr. We will discuss the invoicing process as we get closer to securing an intern.
Are there any learning requirements?
There are no particular learning requirements, per se. However, here are a few things you may want to keep in mind when hosting an intern:
What are the student's strengths and weaknesses in completing tasks at the workplace? Are we providing organized and progressive occupational experiences that expose students to as many aspects of the operation as possible, if applicable? Are we cultivating communication, interpersonal, and professional skills? Are we helping the intern to identify and refine their career goals? Have we discussed future stages in this career and possible pathways? What steps would the intern need to take to enter and develop in this career?
Do I have any say in who the intern will be?
Absolutely! You get to decide what your eligibility requirements will be. For example, if you require an 18 year old for insurance purposes, state that under eligibility below. In order for you to have a closer look at the candidates, review resumes/cover letters, and conduct interviews yourself, we will send you an invite from MajorClarity so you can have that capability. All students who apply will have to upload a resume and cover letter to be reviewed. There is also a feature to conduct interviews directly on the platform to get a better glimpse of the candidates.
How do I get started?
Please complete this “Employer Participation Form" in detail and we will use it as a blueprint to post the internship on MajorClarity for students to apply. We will reach out if any information is missing or needs to be reviewed. We will follow up with you before an intern is identified to share the training agreement and memorandum of understanding (MOU) for payment. Our goal is to try and have all the internships posted to the platform by April 14.
