Adesso Trieste, a municipalist political space established in 2020 in Trieste, proposes the realization of a civic laboratory aimed at collective rethinking and redesign of the urban area of Maddalena, located in the south-eastern periphery of Trieste, heavily impacted by an unsustainable urban development model. The project is supported and funded by the European Municipalist Network (EMN).
In line with a recently civic mobilisation by the Committee Maddalena Vive, the objective of MadLAB is the opening of a discussion and a co-design process to reflect on a "green compensation for the area".
Content
MadLAB will take place from 19th to 21st May, in Trieste (Italy).
The three days will be dedicated to urban explorations, co-design sessions, focus seminars. All activities will be held in presence.
Participants will have the opportunity to work in mixed teams composed of Maddalena inhabitants, Adesso Trieste members, experts and national and international municipal activists, and will be asked to reflect and produce design solutions that must refer to three main themes:
- social and environmental justice;
- inclusion and accessibility;
- links with the history of the area.
Urban explorations will be tackled using participatory mapping tools, in order to collectively analyse weaknesses, strengths, opportunities and threats, taking into consideration the points of view of local residents, their requests and needs.
Participatory design sessions will develop proposals for the reuse and regeneration of empty/underused spaces and for better connectivity (social and mobility) throughout the neighbourhood.
Focus seminars will allow to share international best practices and experiences.
All activities will be held in Italian; we will provide for English translation, following international participants’ needs, as well as to guarantee international dissemination of the project results.
Later on, in June 2023, a neighbourhood event will constitute an occasion to share the final results of the civic laboratory with a broader public (local residents, local associations, committees and unions, etc.).
Applications
Those interested are encouraged to apply by providing supporting information to verify eligibility (to be submitted in English). Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience of social and political municipalist experiences across Europe.
Visiting participants, who will be selected through an open call, taking into consideration gender equality criteria and the variety of social and political municipalist experiences across Italy and Europe, will be also asked to co-organise three dissemination seminars during their stay, in order to share their best practices and experiences, targeting Adesso Trieste activists.
Applicants will be chosen based on their eligibility and relevance of their application to the overall theme of MadLAB and invitation of the Open Call. A minimum of 3 and up to 6 eligible participants will be selected following the open call deadline, and according to our travel coverage budget. The selection will be made by the Presidency Board of Adesso Trieste.
The results of the selection will be communicated by e-mail. Following the results’ communication, participants will sign an agreement with Adesso Trieste, which will detail the conditions of their participation. By signing the Agreement, participants consent also to their inclusion in photographic or filmic documentation of MadLAB.
