    Welcome NLC App

Congratulations on making the decision to apply to the 2024 New Leaders Council Fellowship. We're so glad you're here! Here's what you can expect from this application process.

In section 1, we will collect your demographic information. This is important because NLC chapters across the country are looking for a balanced class of Fellows across various identities, issues, and industries.

The questions in section 2 will gather deeper information about you and the issues you care about. NLC selections teams will be looking for candidates who align with our organizational values, show leadership in advancing progress in their communities, and an affinity for collaboration.

Section 3 will be all about scenarios and simulations. You may submit either written or video responses to these questions.

As a reminder, applications close on Wednesday, September 13th at 10am ET.

We have provided audio, visual, and script (below) for this section. Materials covered in video are same to the script.

    Section 2A

Thanks for sharing your demographic information in section 1. In this section, tell us about yourself beyond the surface level.

In most fellowships it’s likely you would lead with your resume, but at NLC we care about creating a diverse, inclusive, and dynamic fellowship that includes more than just your professional accomplishments. NLC believes that sharing your personal narrative is a practice of leadership. This section is divided into 2 parts. You may submit your responses in writing or as video recordings. If you are using videos, please take no more than 2 minutes per question to respond.

The format you select for responses will not impact your application score.

    Section 2A.

Share your personal narrative. Some examples of topics you can discuss in your response are:

    • The people who have impacted your journey
    • The experiences and environments that have shaped your life
    • The ways you spend your time
    • The things that motivate you personally or professionally
    • Why you are excited to apply for NLC

**Let your answers flow naturally, your authenticity is what we're looking for.

You will also find 2 video demonstrations and 1 written demonstration below.

    Example 1 - Ambar (Video)

    Example 2 - Karen (Video)

    Example 3 - Carson (Written)

I am Mary, fifth of my name. I come from a long line of strong women. From my grandmothers who climbed from field, to factory, to corporate leadership, to real estate, to my science-loving librarian mom, those before me have their fingerprints on my DNA and how I view myself and my role in this world. It is my duty to make an impact. Growing up in rural North Florida, the outdoors have always been my solace: cool springs, dark rivers, shady forests. This is home. And protecting those places, and the critters who live there, has been both my greatest joy and hardest fight. When not outdoors or working with environmental activists to communicate conservation, I honor my grandmothers' love for sharing old things with a new joy. I opened my vintage home goods business, Curiosity Co. to curate joy for myself and my cross-country customers. I am motivated by my past and how our stories will live on into the future.

  • SECTION 2 (Part B)

We have provided audio, visual, and script (below) for this section. Materials covered in video are same to the script.

    Section 2B

Thanks for sharing your personal narrative introduction with us. Now, we will go into a community issue that your are passionate about resolving.

    Section 2B

If you are accepted into the NLC Fellowship, you will create a plan for a capstone project during the 6-month Institute. This plan will address a community issue or need you are passionate about.

While NLC doesn't expect you to start the Institute with a fully thought out plan, we do want to know one community issue you have contemplated and/ or devoted time and energy towards and what top 2 - 3 actions you would take to continue addressing it.

NLC selections committees are looking for specific responses that show your commitment to advancing progress and making positive change in your community.

  • Scenario 1: While working as a supervisor in a company, you notice a co-worker and friend, Brian, talking to one of his direct reports, Gabby. Brian is a cis-gender white male and Gabby is a queer Latina who's been in her role at the company for 6 months. Gabby clearly looks uncomfortable and upset but you decide not to approach her immediately. Later that day, you call Gabby into your office to ask how she is acclimating to her role. After some time, Gabby confides to you that Brian has asked her to “tone down her hair because it is unprofessional”. While Gabby is upset, she tells you that this is not the first comment Brian, and other white co-workers, have made about her appearance. Gabby also states that she has heard similar comments made to her BIPOC identifying female co-workers. What actionable steps would you take to navigate the situation and create a safe and inclusive environment for Gabby and others moving forward?

  • Scenario 2: Your sister has a mental health disorder that she discusses openly with others. She has always told you that she copes with her condition through the use of humor and laughter. You believe it is your responsibility to be her comic relief and often bring levity into your workspaces as well. A coworker recently mentioned that your jokes and comments regarding mental health are sometimes insensitive and offensive. While the feedback initially made you feel frustrated and embarrassed, you are open to continuous growth. How do you respond to the co-worker? What, if any, changes do you make to your behavior?
