  • Lance Corporal Juan Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship Fund

  • The Texas Association of Pawnbrokers (TAP) launched the "Juan Rodrigo Rodriguez Memorial Scholarship Fund" to honor the memory of Lance Cpl. Juan Rodrigo Rodriguez, who was killed in action January 13, 2005 in Iraq. Juan was a 23-year-old Marine reservist assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 23rd Marines, based in Corpus Christi. After completing his basic training for the Marines in 2001, Juan went to work for L. Bufalo Pawn in Laredo. Bob Simpson, owner of L. Bufalo Pawn and long time member of TAP, remembers Juan as his hardest working, least complaining, and a most trustworthy employee. According to Mr. Simpson, when Juan was activated to serve his country, he did so proudly and with honor.

    Eligibility Criteria/ Qualifications:
    We award $1,000.00 annually from the Texas Association of Pawnbrokers. El Bufalo Pawn, a longtime member of the TAP organization, will also match the TAP scholarship to students. Therefore, we have $2,000.00 to award to two individuals. The requirements are:

    1. Applicant must be a Texas High School senior or a full-time Texas College Student good standing with the school/university.
    2. Applicant must have a 2.75 GPA or better.
    3. Special consideration will be given to one applicant that has an affiliation with the pawn industry. Please explain and attach as a separate document.
    4. Please submit an essay of 200 words or less. The essay subject is: "How pawnshops are an asset to our community." Essays will not be returned and become the property of TAP for future publication in our newsletter "The Texas Pawnbroker"
    5. Scholarship payments will be mailed directly to the University or College.
    6. Deadline for 2024 application/submission is end of day January 31, 2024.

    Notice: Winners will be asked to either attend the annual TAP Convention taking place in Galveston, Texas Febraury 24 OR particpate in an interview to be published in the TAP magazine/newsletter/publication.
