My son Joseph M. Tocci was in a fatal car accident in February 2023 just a short time after he turned 23. He was so very kind and loving which was very evident during his Celebration of Life. As I sat there that day, still in shock and heartbroken, my youngest son told me I needed to turn around and look behind me. I hesitated as he urged me to look. When I did, it was standing room only. The room was clearly above what the fire marshall would deem legal. People filed out the back door and down the side hallway. When the time came for people to speak and share their memories of my sweet boy, a theme began to appear. His friends shared the amount of overwhelming kindness that he had, as he was always there no matter what the circumstances. He was remembered as the guy you could call and he would come running. If you needed help or a chore done he came running. If someone was struggling, he was there to help. I always knew my son had a kind and loving heart, but that day made my extremely broken heart give a smile because he had touched so many people's lives. As I pondered what I wanted to do to honor the kindness that he spread, as well as keep his memory alive, I knew a scholarship was the way to go. I am a teacher after all! Therefore, I created a scholarship for the student who is kind, helpful, dependable and loving to all people that they come across. The student who receives this scholarship would be the epitome of kindness and someone that all people in their life would point out as the kindest person they know.
