"Color Gets All the Credit While Value Does All the Work." We've all heard versions of this trueism, but what does it mean? Learning to see color as value –that is, as lighter or darker compared with others in your painting– takes experience to recognize and apply in a challenging plein air setting. Celebrated painter and art educator Lisa Stauffer will demystify the real secret behind the science of two dimensional realism by demonstrating and explaining how to observe, plan, and apply color according to its equivalent grayscale value.
Lisa works in pastel, but the principles she will teach apply across all two dimensional color media. Bring your painting rig and paint along, or bring a chair, watch, listen and take notes. Afterwards we'll get lunch in Lincoln Park and enjoy a paint-out in the neighborhood around GLAFA. Stay or come back for the public reception displaying paintings from Plein Air Duluth participants from 5-7pm in the main studio at GLAFA.
This workshop is included with annual membership in Outdoor Painters of Minnesota. Non-members may attend for a $25 registration fee.
