    Conflict of Interest, Code of Ethics, and Confidentiality
  • Conflict of Interest

  • Volunteers are likely to be professionally or personally affiliated with many organizations in their communities. It is not unusual for actual or potential conflicts of interest to arise. A conflict of interest exists when the personal or professional interests of a Community Investment Volunteer affects his or her ability to be objective.

    Examples of Conflict of Interest

    • You, a close friend, or a family member is a current employee or board member of the organization
    • You were a client or employee of an organization within the past 5 years
    • You or a family member makes a significant financial contribution to the organization (over $1,000 annually within the past 5 years)
    • Any other reason that results in your inability to remain impartial
  • Code of Ethics

  • United Way of Marquette County is committed to the highest ethical standards.  The success of United Way depends upon the ethical conduct of everyone affiliated with the organization.   This Code establishes key guidelines to assist United Way volunteers in making good decisions that are ethical and in accordance with applicable legal requirements.

     Personal and Professional Integrity

    · Strive to meet the highest standards of performance, quality, service and achievement in working towards the United Way mission.

    · Communicate honestly and openly and avoid misrepresentation.

    · Promote a working environment where honesty, open communication and minority opinions are valued.

    ·  Exhibit respect and fairness toward all those with whom contact is made.

     Accountability

    · Promote good stewardship of United Way resources that are used to pay operating expenses, salaries and employee benefits

    · Observe and comply with all laws and regulations affecting United Way

     Solicitations and Voluntary Giving

     United Way encourages voluntary giving to its annual fundraising campaign.  All campaign volunteers are instructed to adhere to the principal of voluntary giving which precludes the use of pressure or coercion in soliciting campaign contributions.

     Diversity and Equal Opportunity

     United Way values, champions and embraces diversity in all aspects of its activities.  United Way respects others without regard to race, religion, creed, color, gender, age, disability, national origin or ancestry, marital status, veteran status or sexual orientation.

     Conflicts of Interest

     United Way volunteers:

    · Should not knowingly take any action, or make any statement, intended to influence the conduct of United Way in a manner to confer any financial benefit on themselves, their immediate family members or any organization in which they or their immediate family members have a significant interest as employees, stakeholders, directors or officers.

    · Disclose to the Chairperson of the United Way Board or Committee (as relevant) and the Executive Director all known conflicts or potential conflicts of interest in any matter before the Board of Directors, if they are Board members, or any United Way committee upon which they serve.

     United Way Board Members and Community Investment Committee members:

     Shall upon accepting office complete a disclosure statement on a form furnished by United Way and approved by the Board of Directors which provides information about significant interests (including family relationships) with United Way member agencies.   This form, which is filed with the Executive Director, shall be updated annually.  The forms shall be available for review by any United Way Board or Community Investment Committee member and shall be provided to Chairpersons of the Board, Executive Committee and Community Investment Committee to help assure timely disclosure of potential conflicts at the start of any deliberation.

     Confidentiality & Privacy

     Ensure that all information, designated as confidential, privileged or nonpublic, is not disclosed inappropriately.  It is the policy of United Way of Marquette County that the internal business affairs of the organization and all program participant information represent United Way assets that each Board member, staff, volunteer, and representative has an obligation to protect.  Board members, staff, volunteers and representatives authorized to have access to confidential, privileged or nonpublic information must treat the information as proprietary United Way property for which they are personally responsible.  The privacy rights of all individuals in performance of their United Way duties will be respected.

     Volunteers are encouraged to seek guidance from the Executive Committee or the Board of Directors concerning the interpretation or application of this Code of Ethics.  Any known or possible breaches of the Code of Ethics should be disclosed to the Executive Committee or Board of Directors for investigation to a prompt and fair resolution.

     

  • Confidentiality Agreement

  • In order to protect the confidentiality of the nonprofit organizations and their clients:

    • I will not divulge information discussed at meetings with anyone except fellow team members, appropriate United Way of Marquette County staff, or the Community Investment Chair and Vice Chair.
    • I will not use privileged information gained as a Community Investment Volunteer for personal or professional gain.
    • I will not photograph or record any portion of the Community Investment Panels.
    • I will not share any information received via email and will destroy any hard copies of information and/or notes taken during the CI Panels.
