Writing Workshop Description
Writing is one of the most lasting and powerful forms of communication. The objective of this course is to provide growing writers with effective writing strategies and to develop their existing writing skills in a workshop format. Each class will feature essential writing skills and give opportunities to each student to practice those skills through exercises, stories, and essay writing. Students will also be learning from acclaimed authors how to engage audiences more effectively through examples and exercises.
The topics will be as follows:
- BEGINNING: Descriptive Writing, Nonfiction Story, Creative Story, Argumentative Essay, Proofreading Skills
- ADVANCED: Personal Memoir, Creative Story, Vignettes, Personal Essay, Revision Strategies
Writing Workshop Session 1: June 14th - July 19th
W1C: Wednesday 6-7 pm EST
W2C: Wednesday 7-8 pm EST
- Grades: Rising 3-6 (2023-2024)
- Duration: 6 Weeks Online
- Tuition: $255 ($225 by 5/15) CODE: jls2023
- Assessment: Student needs to submit a recent writing to be placed on a proper class. Students may join either level 1 or 2 depends on the instructor's evaluation. Please reserve both level's class time.
Instructor: Ms. West graduated from Otterbein University with a degree in education and a concentration in reading and writing. She has worked as a teacher in both public and private elementary and middle schools, designing reading and writing curriculum and training English teachers in prestigious private schools, as well as coaching many students to win writing competitions and having their work published in educational creative writing magazines. She currently works in public schools and is the designer of the JLS writing program. With over 10 years of experience in teaching English, she will be able to help children make greater progress in their writing. With her professionalism and enthusiasm, she hopes to lead students through step-by-step instructions and exercises that will make reading and writing in English interesting and fun, and unlock their potential to improve their reading and writing skills.

Instructor: Mrs. Konopinski earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in English from Oberlin College and her Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. In college, she studied various methodologies of teaching and tutoring writing and had the opportunity to work with college students in the Oberlin Writing Associate program. During her time teaching as an elementary school English teacher, she deepened her interest and experience in working with students to hone their writing skills and develop their passion for the English language. She is also an experienced piano teacher of ten years and has helped students to compete and win at state and international competitions.

Instructor: Ms. Ventresca is a student at Yale University double majoring in Economics and Theater and Performance Studies. Through the National Honor Society Peer Tutor Program and instructing Taekwondo classes as a fourth-degree black belt, she has taught students of all ages in multiple disciplines. Having been named a National Merit Scholar and AP Scholar with Distinction for her academics and service in high school, Emma is also very familiar with the college application, interview, and admissions processes. She received acceptances from universities such as Princeton, Stanford, Brown, Cornell, and Duke, in addition to the Stamps Scholarship at Notre Dame and the Jefferson Scholarship at the University of Virginia. Ms. Ventresca is passionate about engaging with students in meaningful ways while building confidence in the classroom. She hopes to help students define and reach their own ideas of success as well as grant them the tools they will need to excel on their standardized assessments such as the SAT and AP exams.
