What is GLP?
Gestalt Language Processing is one of two types of language development. While it is common in Autistic children, neurotypical people can also be Gestalt Language Processors (GLP). Instead of learning language one word at a time, GLPs learn language through larger chunks such as phrases, full sentences, or even full stories or movies. Children use their echolalia or gestalts/scripts to communicate. They then learn to recogonize the patterns within these phrases and begin to mix and match. Once children can mix and match different portions of their scripts, they learn to isolate single words with referential meaning. Finally, they begin to recombine these words into self generated phrases.
A majority of Autistic individuals have sensory and emotional regulation needs that make coming to a clinic difficult. They may not speak as freely in an unfamiliar and sometimes jarring environment. However, when they are in the safety and comfort of their own home, their scripts can become more free flowing, making home visits a necessity for many of our clients. Home visits are also hugely beneficial to the family as they allow opportunity for the family and clinician to work side by side. Some non-Autistic GLPs can also benefit from having sessions at their home as certain scripts can be context dependent.
