The cost of private instruction can be a barrier to aspiring orchestral musicians. The Beginner Player Program is available for beginner students who live in Saskatchewan, that offers up to $400 of funding for private lessons.
While youth is our priority, this opportunity is open to anyone who has never played an orchestral instrument. Anyone who has not played an instrument in many years and wants to take private lessons to then join a community orchestral group is considered a beginner for this purpose. Priority is given to string instruments, but all orchestral instruments are welcome.
Applicants must be beginners starting private lessons with a qualified teacher, and the teacher cannot have a familial relationship with the student. The scholarship does not include books, strings, or equipment.
Successful applicants must secure an instructor within 15 days of approval. Lessons will be funded from September to December 31, 2023.
The program has limited space and funds, and applications will be accepted while funds are available. Adjudication will be based on SOA's priorities (https://www.saskorchestras.com/home/about).
The program is intended to support new orchestral students by providing a monetary grant for beginner lessons. Eligible applicants are citizens or permanent residents of Canada living in Saskatchewan, and eligible activities include private lessons for new students with a qualified, independent orchestral instructor. The SOA grant will cover up to $400 in instructor fees, paid directly to the instructor.
