Plein-Air Painting with April Knox Workshop Registration Form

Workshop Information

This three-day plein-air oil painting workshop will include lectures, hand-outs, demonstrations, and individual instruction on the process and approach to painting outdoors. The workshop will take place on location in Pioneer Park with a variety of subject matter. The class will meet from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. each day. All levels of experience are welcome! 

 

What you will learn:

• How to successfully use the tools for outdoor painting
• How to create an outdoor painting from start to finish
• How to create a strong composition
• How to identify and simplify values and create a “value underpainting”
• An understanding of atmospheric perspective and translating that into your painting
• An understanding of changing and reflected light and learning how to observe and apply it to your painting
• How to work with a limited palette and mix colors for your specific needs
• How to strengthen your skill from a constructive critique
• And much more!!!

Comprehensive Supply List

Most supplies can be found at Michaels or similar large retail stores in the Fairbanks area. If participants order supplies online, they are responsible for doing so with enough time to receive them before the workshop. Note: if you have any questions about the supply list, April is happy to help! Call 907-347-1217 to speak with April.

• Plein air easel (April has 4 easels that participants can borrow on a first-come, first-served basis upon workshop signup.  You will be notified if you were one of the first ones to be able to borrow an easel.  If not notified, you must bring your own.)
• Six (6) various sized canvases/or panels
  • recommended sizes include:
    • 8x10" (2-3)
    • 9x12" (2-3)
    • 11x14" (1-2)
• Oil paint (Student grade paints are fine for this class. Michael's in Fairbanks carries Winsor and Newton Winton series also Gamblin 1980 series)
  • The colors April will be using are the following:
    • Titanium White
    • Ultramarine Blue
    • Alizarin crimson
    • Cadmium Red
    • Cadmium Orange
    • Cadmium Yellow med
    • Cadmium Lemon Yellow
    • Prussian Blue
    • Yellow Ochre
  • Please feel free to add or omit colors to your own preference
• Brushes of various sizes (student grade brushes are fine for the workshop. Michaels has a decent selection.)
  • flats or filberts
  • one of each: sizes 2, 4, 6
  • one: liner or rigger brush
• Solvent of choice (April uses turpentine)
• Palette cup to hold solvent (a small jar with lid works fine)
• Two (2) palette knives with rounded tips
  • 1 small and 1 larger
• One (1) small sketchbook (any size)
• Paper towels
• Wet paint carrier (not essential but nice to have to transfer your wet paintings). Attendees must have a method to transport their wet paintings at the end of each day.
• Viewfinder (April has a few that everyone can all share)

• I am aware this workshop will primarily be outside and move around Pioneer Park.
• I am responsible for my own lunch.  A fridge and microwave will be available.
• I understand that I will not be refunded if I cancel after June 6th at 6:00 PM or do not show up for the workshop.
• I am responsible for my paintings, art materials, and personal belongings.  Fairbanks Arts Association is not liable for any damages or lost items if improperly stored or left outside of the designated area for the materials.
• If I am unaware that my membership has expired and have chosen the current member pricing, Fairbanks Arts will inform me and ask me to renew.
