  • Major Course Requirements

  • There are 6 categories of required courses for the major:

    1. Introductory Courses: 3 Courses
    2. Laboratory Experience: 3 Courses
    3. Advanced Courses: 4 or 5 Courses
    4. Diversification Electives: 1 or 2 Courses
    5. Ancillary Fields: 9 Courses with Indicated Labs
    6. Upper-Level Writing (ULW) Requirements: 2 Courses

For each category, select the course that you have completed or plan to complete to satisfy the major requirements. Each column should have a response. If planning to complete, please note when you are planning on taking the course. Be aware of the following:

    • Transfer Credit: Must be approved before taking courses elsewhere. Includes biology and ancillary requirements.
    • Courses with S/F Grades: Cannot apply S/F to major. Includes biology and ancillary requirements.
    • Schedule Changes: All schedules are tentative; however, students should keep advisors aware and up-to-date on changes.
    • BIO GPA Minimum: 2.00 or better is needed to maintain the major. Only BIOL coursework grades are calculated. Does not include grades from ancillary courses.
  • Introductory Courses: 3 Courses

  •
  • Laboratory Experience: 3 courses

  •
  • Advanced Courses: 4-5 Courses

  •
  • For Advanced Electives- Majors may take either:

    • 3 advanced electives and 1 diversification elective
    • 2 advanced electives and 2 diversification electives
  •
  • Diversification Elective: 1-2 Courses

  • Select one or two courses from the BEB diversification electives list: https://www.sas.rochester.edu/bio/undergraduate/diversification-electives/beb.html The course(s) must be approved by the track coordinator and should be outside of the BEB major.

Note: BIO 217L: Principles of Human Anatomy with Lab and BIO/BME 258: Human Anatomy may not be used to satisfy the diversification requirement

  • Ancillary Fields: 9 courses w/ Indicated Labs

Select one course from each subject area.
  •
  • Note: CHM 171 and its associated lab, CHM 173, will also fulfill the organic chemistry requirement. Students completing both CHM 171 and 172 with associated labs do not need to take CHM 132.

  •
  • Please note that Math 141 is the prerequisite to STAT 190.

  • Plus two of the following ancillary electives:
    • Math: MTH 150, 164, 165, or 218 (the latter, "Introduction to Mathematical Models in Life Science," is particularly appropriate for the BEB track)
    • Computer Programming: BIO 208, CSC 109, 161, 170, 171, ECE 114, or other programming course with advisor approval (CSC 108 & 110 not acceptable)
    • Organic Chemistry: CHM 204 with associated lab, CHM 208, or CHM 172/210
    • Physics: PHY 114, 122, or 142 *Please note the prerequisites for taking PHYS114 are Math 141-143 or Math 161-162.
    • Statistics: STT 201, 216, or 277

  • Upper-Level Writing (ULW) Requirements: 2 courses

  • Calculating Major GPA

    Letter Grade Points of Credit
    A 4.0
    A- 3.7
    B+ 3.3
    B 3.0
    B- 2.7
    C+ 2.3
    C 2.0
    C- 1.7
    D+ 1.3
    D 1.0
    D- 0.7
    E 0

Points for a course are calculated by the points of credit (numeric value for each letter grade) multiplied by the number of credits for the course. E.g. Receiving an A (4.0 points of credit) for a 4 credit course = 4 x 4 = 16 points for course.

The point-hour ratio (cumulative grade point average) is calculated by dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of hours (excluding transfer credits, AP credits, or credits earned with a grade of CR) for which the student has received final grades, whether passing or failing. Grades of S, F, and P do not affect this ratio.
