  • Major Course Requirements

  • There are 6 categories of required courses for the major:

    1. Introductory Courses: 3 Courses (12 Credits)
    2. Laboratory Experience: 3 Courses (3 Credits)
    3. Advanced Courses: 7 Courses (28 Credits)
    4. Diversification Electives: 1 Course (4 Credits)
    5. Ancillary Fields: 6 Courses with Indicated Labs
    6. Upper-Level Writing (ULW) Requirements: 2 Courses

For each category, select the course that you have completed or plan to complete to satisfy the major requirements. Each column should have a response. If planning to complete, please note when you are planning on taking the course. Be aware of the following:

    • Transfer Credit: Must be approved before taking courses elsewhere. Includes biology and ancillary requirements.
    • Courses with S/F Grades: Cannot apply S/F to major. Includes biology and ancillary requirements.
    • Schedule Changes: All schedules are tentative; however, students should keep advisors aware and up-to-date on changes.
    • BIO GPA Minimum: 2.00 or better is needed to maintain the major. Only BIOL coursework grades are calculated. Does not include grades from ancillary courses.
  • Introductory Courses: 3 Courses (12 Credits)

  • Laboratory Experience: 3 courses (3 credits)

  •
  • Advanced Courses: 7 Courses (28 Credits)

  • Update:

For statistics requirement, choose one of the following:

    • STAT 180 (formerly 212) Applied Statistics + STAT 216 Applied Statistics Methods
    • STAT 190 (formerly 213)
    • STAT 214 Biostatistics
    • CSC 262 Computational Introduction to Statistics

Be sure to check course descriptions for prerequisites.

  •
  • Diversification Elective: 1 Course (4 Credits)

  • Select one 200-Level UPBM course outside of the BCD curriculum. For list, visit: http://www.sas.rochester.edu/bio/undergraduate/diversification-electives/bcb.html

  • Ancillary Fields: 6 courses w/ Indicated Labs

Select one course from each subject area.
  •
  •
  • Upper-Level Writing (ULW) Requirements: 2 courses

  • Although students are strongly encouraged to complete both ULW requirements by taking biological sciences courses (BIO, BCH, MBI, NSC), an upper-level writing course within a natural sciences discipline may also be used to meet one of the requirements.

  • Calculating Major GPA

    Letter Grade Points of Credit
    A 4.0
    A- 3.7
    B+ 3.3
    B 3.0
    B- 2.7
    C+ 2.3
    C 2.0
    C- 1.7
    D+ 1.3
    D 1.0
    D- 0.7
    E 0

Points for a course are calculated by the points of credit (numeric value for each letter grade) multiplied by the number of credits for the course. E.g. Receiving an A (4.0 points of credit) for a 4 credit course = 4 x 4 = 16 points for course.

The point-hour ratio (cumulative grade point average) is calculated by dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of hours (excluding transfer credits, AP credits, or credits earned with a grade of CR) for which the student has received final grades, whether passing or failing. Grades of S, F, and P do not affect this ratio.

To run/calculate quickly, run Workday report URSTU N1189 (Academic History by Subject) with the following settings (if not noted, you can leave blank):
