• Long Consent Form: Technology and Cognitive Dissonance

  • FOR QUESTIONS ABOUT THE STUDY, CONTACT: Sahar Jahanikia (sahar.jahanikia@asdrp.org) and/or the Research Team (dissonace_research@asdrp.org)

DESCRIPTION: You are invited to participate in a research study on the relationship between currently developing forms of technology, such as feelings of dissonance (discrepancy between someone's external actions and their internal values), and artificial intelligence (AI), smart homes, social media, and autonomous vehicles. This study will ask you about your opinions on Al, smart home devices, social media, and autonomous vehicles. The purpose of the study is to better understand the behavioral plasticity that people may feel in relation to technology adoption, a phenomenon which describes the process of integrating growing technology into society. You will be asked to take a questionnaire where you will rate on a scale of 1-10 how much you agree with a statement. Answering with 1 would mean "Strongly Disagree," while 10 would be "Strongly Agree." This research study is looking to enroll about 200 participants.

    Future Use of Private Information

Research using private information is an important way to try to understand your dissonance regarding various growing technologies, such as Al, smart home devices, social media, and autonomous vehicles. You are being given this information because the investigators want to save private information for future research. Because your information will not be linked to your name after it is collected, you cannot withdraw your consent to the use of the information after it is collected. In order to withdraw your consent to participation in this study, you need to contact the Principal Investigator at sahar.jahanikia@asdrp.org

Identifiers are removed from identifiable private information and, after such removal, the information could be used for future research studies without additional informed consent from you.

  • RISKS AND BENEFITS: There are no risks associated with this study. However, this assessment may lead to feelings of discomfort or distress if you have had a very negative experience or have extremely unpleasant associations with: Al, smart home devices, social media, or autonomous vehicles. There are also no benefits associated with this study.

TIME INVOLVEMENT: Your participation in this experiment will take approximately 30 minutes.

COMPENSATION: There is no compensation associated with participation in this study.

PARTICIPANT'S RIGHTS: If you have read this form and have decided to participate in this project, please understand your participation is voluntary and you have the right to withdraw your consent or discontinue your participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are otherwise entitled. What is the purpose of this research study and how will my information be utilized in the study?

The purpose of this research study is to achieve a better understanding of the dissonance that individuals may be feeling in relation to technology adoption and its uses in society. Your answers to the assessment questions will be analyzed to understand what many individuals think and feel about the performance of novel technologies and technology adoption overall. In future meetings and publications, your identity will not be disclosed when discussing the results.

Do I have to sign this authorization form?

It is not required for you to sign this form. But if you do not, you will not be able to participate in this research study.

If I sign, can I revoke it or withdraw from the research later?

If you decide to participate, you are free to withdraw your authorization regarding the use and disclosure of your information (and to discontinue any other participation in the study) at any time. After any revocation, your information will no longer be used or disclosed in the study, except to the extent that the law allows us to continue using your information (e.g., necessary to maintain integrity of research). If you wish to revoke your authorization for the research use or disclosure of your information in this study, you must write to the research team at dissonace_research@asdrp.org and sahar.jahanikia@asdrp.org

WITHDRAWAL FROM STUDY: The Protocol Director may also withdraw you from the study without your consent for one or more of the following reasons:

    • Failure to follow the instructions of the Protocol Director and study staff.
