What is a Peer Leader?
The Peer Leader (PL) role is vital to tSB as a youth-led organization. PL's are ambassadors and youth leaders of tSB. The PL Program’s mission is to facilitate the development of youth leadership skills in a select group of tSB graduates. We'll do this by training you in leadership, personal, professional, and other life skills.
Peer Leader responsibilities include:
- Attend weekly Peer Leader meetings
- Responsible for facilitating at least one Wednesday night workshop
- Help with general coordination of program nights including,
- Set up, clean up, opening circle, family group activities, etc.
- Help choose and develop program workshops and service projects
- Evaluate Prophet & Mentor applications and give suggestions for acceptance
- Interview and choose Mentors
- Serve as a bridge between Prophets and Mentors
- Work with our Prophets during small group discussions, manage large group dynamics, and encourage participation (on the mountain, and at service projects)
- Recruit and identify potential Peer Leaders for the next year
- Fostering tSB’s culture and values within the Core Program space
- Fulfill the Peer Leader role in the retention of Prophets
- Peer Leaders will choose one project, goal, or area of focus that they would like to complete by the end of Core Program.
- Public speaking, marketing, event planning, curriculum writing, service project, social justice workshop etc.
Optional Opportunities:
- Provide organizational leadership by participating in our hiring and visioning processes, which include recruiting and interviewing potential youth participants, mentors, and staff
- Attend Board meetings and serve on Board committees to provide youth voice with the strategic direction of the organization
Expectations & Time Commitments
The program begins the last week of October and ends in May. Peer Leaders are required to attend weekly Peer Leader Meetings, Core Program Workshops (Wednesday evenings), and Snowboarding & Service days (Saturdays)
The below time commitments are MANDATORY for all selected PLs.
Time commitments during PL Training (Last week of October - January):
- Attending at least 80% of PL meetings is required
- Attend trainings with Mentors and Snowboard Instructors from October through January (after school and on the weekend).
- Attend the PL-Mentor Retreat in January (subject to change)
- Attend Peer Leader Retreat
- Interview potential Mentors
- Recruit and choose Prophets
Time commitments during Core Program (January to May):
- 10-12 hours a week
- Wednesdays: 2.5 hours
- Saturdays: 8 hours
- Peer Leader Meetings: 1-2 hours
- Attending at least 80% of Core Program is required, this includes
- Peer Leader Meetings (Tuesdays)
- Program workshops (Wednesdays)
- Snowboarding days (Saturdays)
- Core Program retreats (Some weekends)
