  • Characterization of beekeeping activity

A very brief description of your beekeeping activity
  •
  • Bee-friendly plant species

In this section, we ask for information about the most important plant species in the area of your hives. For "Percentage cover" consider the foraging area of the bees. For "Pollen", "Nectar" and "Honeydew", please select the importance that species has for each of these resources. If you want to indicate specific days for the flowering period, you can add them in "Additional information", using, if possible, the template: start: dd-mm; peak: dd-mm; end: dd-mm. Note: You don’t need to fill out all 20 species, just the ones you find more relevant for honey bees in the area of your hives.

  • Environmental variables

In this section, try to relate and characterise the environmental variables to the overall honey bees' activity and performance. "Importance" refers to the level of importance a variable has in bee activity. "Effect" can be positive (bee activity increases as the variable increases), negative (bee activity decreases as the variable increases), or unknown. For "Range", consider the interval of values where the bees are still active and exhibit a good performance. Example: considering wind (km/h), you can define it as highly important (3) and as having a negative effect on honey bees’ activity. In terms of range, let’s say bees maintain their activity until the wind reaches 5 km/h, so the range is 0 to 5.

  • Beekeeping suitability

In this section, we want to identify and characterise the most important factors you take into consideration when placing and selecting the location for your hives. "Importance" refers to the level of importance a variable has when you are selecting the location for your hives. "Maximum distance" refers to the maximum distance at which you prefer to place your hives in relation to that parameter. For example, you might consider water availability highly important (3) and tipically place the hives within less than 100m of a water source, so "Maximum distance" is 100.

  • Rules/Laws regulating the beekeeping activity

In this section, we want to identify any regulations implemented in your country regarding the placement of beehives. Select the type of "Regulation" depending on whether or not there are any rules in place. In the case of existing legislation, for "Minimum distance" insert the minimum distance at which you are allowed to place your hives. For example, if in your country there are regulations in place imposing a minimum distance to roads (e.g., hives should not be placed under 100m of any road), on the "Regulation" field you should select "Restricted" and on the "minimum distance field you should add 100. You can use "Notes" to add any information you find relevant.
