  • SCBC Worship Team Orientation
1 Peter 4:10 - "As each one has received a special gift, employ it in
serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God."

  • We're excited that you're interested in being a part of our worship team! It is a fun,
challenging and rewarding ministry. If God has gifted you with musical or technical talent, we want you to be able to use it for His glory! This is a complex ministry with many moving parts. So for your advantage, and that of the worship ministry as a whole, there is a short process to become a regularly scheduled member of the worship team.

  • Requirements

    • Personal relationship with The Lord and assurance of salvation
    • Membership with SCBC and regular attendance.
    • Musical background and giftedness / competency that can contribute to, compliment, or enhance our current music ministry / teams.
    • Must be at least high school age.
  • Application Process

    1. Prayerfully consider your involvement
      • Pray and ask God for guidance in the decision to volunteer your time in this ministry.
      • Speak with your spouse/family about it.
    2. Read this packet, fill out the application completely and turn it in to the worship leader before your scheduled audition.
    3. Interview and audition with the worship leader
      • The interview is a very informal no pressure interview mostly based on getting to know you (1Thess 5:12-13) and answering any questions that you might have.
      • We do not require, but strongly recommend that you attend at least one of our midweek practices before auditioning. Practices cover a lot of ground in a short amount of time. Being a spectator will allow you to see firsthand how practices flow. This will also allow you to know what to expect if you are to join the worship team. Since nerves can be large factor in the audition process, coming to a practice will give you a chance to meet and become more comfortable with the people that you will be auditioning alongside.
      • There are two parts to the audition. First is the solo audition. In the solo audition you will play or sing something that you have prepared for by yourself. Then you will audition while working with the band. You will be copied on the weekly set list email early in the week so that you can prepare for the songs for that practice just like the rest of the team.
      • Since we are serving an excellent God we strive to offer him an excellent offering of worship. Our purpose as a worship team is to be a transparent channel with which to lead people in the worship of our mighty God. With that said, not everyone makes the team. This could be either based on the skill level of the applicant, the applicant's heart motive, or not meeting any one of the above listed requirements. Technical skill and Biblical heart motive are musts. If either are lacking or missing it will become a distraction in worship.
      • If you do not make the team there are other opportunities to serve musically such as special music and the youth band (if you are still in grade school) with the potential to grow into the worship team through our crawl - walk - run program as you gain experience working with a band and perfecting your craft.
    4. Post interview and audition results
      • The post interview is very informal and is normally scheduled the Sunday after your audition when the service ends. This is a session in which you can ask questions and give us feedback.
      • During the post interview you will be made aware of the results of your audition.
      • If your audition and interview went well, you will then have the choice of whether or not to join the team.
  • Expectations

  • We want worship to be simple and accessible. We want to lead people to sing to God
with a sincere heart. With that said there is a certain level of preparation, planning and practice that goes into making each and every worship service transparent. Because of this, there is a certain level of commitment that is required from the worship team. This commitment can take on many forms. Here are a few practical areas where a level of commitment is most evident:
    • Be prepared. Practices run infinitely smoother when everyone has listened to the
scheduled music and practiced with it at least once. Being prepared also means having any gear or equipment that you intend to use on Sunday with you for practice (this includes any chord charts, lyric sheets, and/or sheet music that you might need)
    • Be positive. It is much easier to work together when ideas or suggestions are presented and received with a good attitude.
    • Be punctual. Everyone's time is valuable. It's important that everyone be punctual for practice so that we can use our limited time as efficiently as possible. While this should be the exception rather than the rule, when punctuality is impossible...
    • Be flexible. Give grace just as you expect to receive grace (Luke 6:36). If there are any schedule changes, it is the worship leader's responsibility to notify you of the change. While it is not uncommon for these changes to take place, it is only done when necessary.
    • Be modest. SCBC has no official "dress code." However in an effort to keep the focus on God and stray from being a distraction in worship or a stumbling block to others there are a few basic requirements. We encourage looking your best for the Lord while being modest without being legalistic. Shoulders, cleavage and the mid-section should be covered at all times. Skirts/dresses are allowed but should come down to below the knee and care should be taken that clothing is not too tight or form fitting. Any article of clothing with questionable text or graphics should not be worn. Again we want our congregation's focus to be on God which is why modesty is our policy. Should your choice of clothing not meet this standard, you will not be able to participate with the worship team until it has been resolved. This decision is up to the pastor or the worship leader.
    • Be an example. As a member of SCBC's worship team you are a representative of SCBC and more importantly an ambassador of Christ and therefore you will need to conduct yourself properly outside of church just as you would inside the church. Practice Matthew 5:13-16, Romans 12:2, and 1 Corinthians 8:13 in your daily life.

    Last and most importantly...

    • Be a Christ follower. Our mission as a music ministry is not to be performers but to be
true worshippers and to lead people to biblically worship as they observe our example
    of it.
