Both the CWAJ Graduate Scholarship and CWAJ Cartier Scholarship have the same eligibility requirements and are submitted in the same form. The recipient of CWAJ Cartier Scholarship is selected from among the applicants of CWAJ Graduate Scholarship.

An Application ID Number is required to submit all scholarship application documents, including your references.

Your Application ID Number and the links to application forms and links to upload your application materials (Forms 1 and 2) and letters of reference instructions (Form 3) will be sent to you by email upon completing and submitting this form. Please complete this form in English.

Applicants are required to be residing in Japan from time of their application through the date of the interview. We regret that we are unable to accept applications from outside of Japan.

How did you hear about this scholarship?

Please check that you satisfy all of the following criteria for eligibility for this scholarship before proceeding:

I identify as a woman.

(2)*

I am Japanese citizen or Special Permanent Resident (特別永住者).

(3)*

I am living in Japan and will be living in Japan through the end of April 2024.

(4)*

I will have graduated with a degree from a Japanese university (4-year course) by July 31, 2024.

(5)*

I expect to be accepted by March 31, 2024 into a graduate degree program that is taught in English at an accredited university or research institution abroad, and be present and enrolled there for the 2024-2025 academic year.

I will have demonstrated English skill by submitting a TOEFL or IELTS score from a test taken after October 1, 2021. If pursuing a graduate degree in the natural sciences, math, medicine or engineering, I will be able to submit an overall TOEFL score of at least 570 (IBT 88) or an IELTS score of at least 6.5. If pursuing a graduate degree in any other field I will be able to submit a TOEFL score of at least 600 (IBT 98) or an IETLS of at least 7.0. A TOEFL or IELTS score will not be required if I submit a transcript of a 4 year university degree in a program taught in English.

I have not studied outside of Japan at the university level for more than two (2) academic years.

I do not have a degree from a university or institution outside of Japan.

I will not be eligible if I hold a scholarship greater than ¥2 million per year from any other scholarship programs for the duration of the CWAJ Scholarship. (Financial aid and awards from the university where the applicant will study may not be subject to the same limitation.)

Timeline

July 2023	Form A – Registration for Application ID Number on website. Links to the Application Forms will be available after registering for an Application ID Number.
Monday, October 2, 2023, 9:00 JST	Payment of ¥2,000 application fee by bank transfer may be made from this date (and NOT before).
Monday, October 23, 2023, 23:59 JST	Deadline: Application Forms 1 and 2 with required documents and references (Form 3) must be submitted online by the deadline.
February 2024	Interviews: usually held on a weekend
March 2024	Notification of recipients

Application Requirements

You will be required to submit: an application essay, your education transcripts, a TEOFL or IELTS score, two letters of recommendations, a copy of your residence card if applicable, and a ¥2,000 application processing fee. All materials are to be submitted in English. All personal material will be deleted at the end of the scholarship process.

Finalists will be interviewed online or in person in Tokyo. Candidates should plan to be available during the month when interviews are being held (likely February) and will be notified at least two weeks in advance if they have been selected for an interview. Applicants will be notified of the results by email.

CWAJ reserves the right to make its own selections and does not discuss any of its decisions. Please note that CWAJ communicates by email only. Telephone inquiries will NOT be accepted.
