The SETH Academy aims to:
- prepare learners for university studies in the scarce skills professions, based on a strong Mathematical and Science foundation.
- expose a learner to different career opportunities within the SETH field (Science, Health, Technology and Health), via direct exposure and conversations with professionals from the industry and the NWU.
- develop learners’ thinking, practical, and life skills needed for university studies and the labour market.
- increase the number of learners with the ability for further studies in SETH-related fields, such as Science, Engineering, Technology, and Health Sciences.
- develop well-rounded learners promoting the potential to be successful in professional careers.
- emphasise the continuous development of knowledge, expertise and skills through project- and problem-based learning.
The aim of the programme is therefore not primarily to improve learners’ marks or to transfer knowledge, but rather to develop skills over a period of five years, to foster the right aptitude and attitude in order to promote future success at university and thereafter in the world of work.
The learner’s responsibility
The learner undertakes to:
- attend all afternoon sessions of the programme punctually and faithfully.
- be a motivated and active participant
SETH and Enrichment programme options
Please, take note that any gr.9-12 Ferdie learner may apply to take part in any of the options. The first term is a launch event and will be presented at no addisional cost to the learner.
Option 1 - Full SETH programme (Compulsory in Term 1 for Gr.8 learners)
This involves SETH activities on a weekly basis with the emphasis on the development of soft skills that are in demand within the SETH fields of study. Together with these weekly activities, learners will have weekly reading periods using a computerised reading programme. The learners will also receive additional Mathematics and Physical Sciences classes on a weekly rotating basis. Learners will be able to choose between extra-curricular Mathematics- or Alpha Mathematics classes.
Option 2 - Enrichment programme
This includes all enrichment components of option 1 (Reading, Mathematics and Physical Sciences support) without the SETH activities that focus on soft skills.
Option 3 - Alpha Maths
Gr 10 learners can choose to only participate in Alpha Mathematics. This will take place at the same time as the curricular mathematics enrichment.
Option 4 - Activities
The learner can choose to attend only the SETH activity session weekly. This option does not include any enrichment.
