    ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS AND PROCEDURE
  • The following admission requirements and procedure are a reflection of the mission and aims of the school, as determined by the School Governing Body.  The Principal, as Executive Manager, must apply them accordingly.

     

    1. Applications close on 28 September 2023, except in extraordinary cases where well-motivated late applications will be considered.   Completed application forms must be submitted as soon as possible. The prescribed form for admission needs to be completed in full and must be signed by a parent or legal guardian for each learner.  A separate application form must be completed for admission to the hostel.  Hostel application forms will be made available ONLY AFTER a learner has been admitted to the school.

    2. The school will only be responsible for the consideration of applications if the application form has been electronically submitted, and received by the electronic register of the school.  The school, therefore, does not take responsibility for application documents not submitted or submitted incorrectly.

    3. Learners may not exceed the prescribed age for a specific grade by more than three years on the date of enrolment.

    4. Admission is subject to the verification of the most recent academic record of the learner’s previous school.

    5. The following documentation must be attached to the completed application form:

                  •        A copy of the learner’s most recent school report (show original                          on request) 
                  •        ID or birth certificate (copy) 
                  •        Immunisation card (copy)
                  •        Proof of residential address (municipality account, not older than 2 months) 
                  •        IDs of both parents/guardians and the person responsible for the                        account (if not the parent/ guardian)
       

    6. The learner and the parent/guardian are required to underwrite and uphold the mission, aims, and policy of the school by signing an undertaking upon registration.  Hereby, the acceptance of the admission requirements and submission to the disciplinary rules as well as all other school rules and internal measures are confirmed.  Applicants and their parents/guardians must, therefore, sign the following legally binding documents upon registration.     FINANCES
  • These fees are subject to change upon approval of the final 2024 budget (meeting to be held during October 2023).

     

    GRADE 8-12

    School fees:  *R22 240.00 per annum.  This includes all subject fees, textbooks, photocopies as well as transport for sport and most school events (excluding tours).  An initial payment of *R2 500-00 must be made at registration or on the first school day (non-refundable). 

    The balance can be paid in ten monthly installments of *R2 224.00 per month from the end of January. On enrolment learners also have to buy, in addition to their school uniform, the compulsory sportswear at a cost of ±R1 000 for the weekly sports period during school hours. 

    HOSTEL FEES

    Board and lodging: *R40 500.00 per year or *R10 125.00 per term payable strictly in advance. The school follows the pay-to-stay principle. No exemption for hostel fees. A non-refundable reservation fee of *R2 000-00 is payable upon registration.

  • I, the undersigned (name of parent/guardian responsible for school fees) commit to paying the tuition fees for the period January 2024 to October 2024  in  10  equal installments  of  *R1 953.00, so that the full tuition fee will be paid in full before or on 31 October 2024.

    I acknowledge that I have been informed that if I do not pay punctually before or on the 7th of each month, the school is entitled to claim the whole year’s tuition fees immediately.   I further commit to bear all legal fees if the school is forced to hand my account over for collection.  I commit to inform the school immediately of any change of address and if it is necessary to locate me, I undertake to bear all costs involved.

    1. will honour and uphold the mission, vision, and policy of the school.

    2. accept the admission requirements and submit to the Code of Conduct and disciplinary procedure as determined and possibly later adapted by the Principal and the Governing Body.

    3. accept all disciplinary actions which may be taken regarding misconduct.

    4. commit to discussions with the Principal/delegate and submit to the Principal, teaching staff, and Student Representative Council as persons of authority.

    5. accept the content of the curriculum taught and the standard set in all evaluations.

    6. will adhere to our financial obligations punctually, as determined annually by the Governing Body.

    7. will inform the school in case of a change of address.

    DECLARATION: The SETH Academy @ Ferdinand Postma High School
  • The SETH Academy aims to:

    • prepare learners for university studies in the scarce skills professions, based on a strong Mathematical and Science foundation.
    • expose a learner to different career opportunities within the SETH field (Science, Health, Technology and Health), via direct exposure and conversations with professionals from the industry and the NWU.
    • develop learners’ thinking, practical, and life skills needed for university studies and the labour market.
    • increase the number of learners with the ability for further studies in SETH-related fields, such as Science, Engineering, Technology, and Health Sciences.
    • develop well-rounded learners promoting the potential to be successful in professional careers.
    • emphasise the continuous development of knowledge, expertise and skills through project- and problem-based learning.

    The aim of the programme is therefore not primarily to improve learners’ marks or to transfer knowledge, but rather to develop skills over a period of five years, to foster the right aptitude and attitude in order to promote future success at university and thereafter in the world of work.

     

    The learner’s responsibility

    The learner undertakes to:

    • attend all afternoon sessions of the programme punctually and faithfully.
    • be a motivated and active participant

     

    SETH and Enrichment programme options

    Please, take note that any gr.9-12 Ferdie learner may apply to take part in any of the options. The options are only available from the second term for all gr.8 learners as Option 1 is compulsory during the first term.  The first term is a launch event and will be presented at no addisional cost to the learner.

     

    Option 1 - Full SETH programme (Compulsory in Term 1 for Gr.8 learners) 

    This involves SETH activities on a weekly basis with the emphasis on the development of soft skills that are in demand within the SETH fields of study. Together with these weekly activities, learners will have weekly reading periods using a computerised reading programme. The learners will also receive additional Mathematics and Physical Sciences classes on a weekly rotating basis. Learners will be able to choose between extra-curricular Mathematics- or Alpha Mathematics classes.

     

    Option 2 - Enrichment programme

    This includes all enrichment components of option 1 (Reading, Mathematics and Physical Sciences support) without the SETH activities that focus on soft skills. 

     

     

    Option 3 - Alpha Maths

    Gr 10 learners can choose to only participate in Alpha Mathematics. This will take place at the same time as the curricular mathematics enrichment.

     

    Option 4 - Activities

    The learner can choose to attend only the SETH activity session weekly. This option does not include any enrichment.

     

    Fees

    The fees listed for Option 1, 2, and 3 are additional to the school fees per learner and must be paid. No exemptions will be considered.

    This fee is payable on a monthly basis over a period of ten months. Option 1 amounts to R680.00 pm per learner, Option 2 amounts to R340.00 pm per learner. Learners may shift over to other options on a termly basis by providing necessary documentation.

  • DECLARATION AND UNDERTAKING

    I/we, parent(s)/guardian(s) of learner applying, hereby apply for my child to be enrolled in the SETH Academy programme and I/we:

     

    • agree to enroll my child (if in gr.8) for the first and second term.  No refund will be made if my child withdraws from the programme during the year.
    • agree to make the required monthly payments.
    • hereby grant full indemnity to the SETH Academy, school, and lecturers during the time that my child is attending the SETH Academy.
    • agree that photographs and/or videos of my/our child may be taken to be used in the media for marketing of and/or reporting on the SETH Academy.
    • hereby grant permission to the school for releasing my child’s academic results to the SETH Academy on a quarterly basis (only for bursary, research and management purposes, and SETH-related matters).
    • understand that the SETH Academy partners with the NWU for research purposes in order to identify and develop best teaching practices and I give my consent that my child may participate in these.
    • state that the information provided in the application form is true and correct and that I will communicate any change regarding this, in writing to the SETH office (seth@ferdies.co.za / sethbursaries@ferdies.co.za ).

    EXEMPTION OF SCHOOL FEES
  • Parents are hereby notified that the Schools Act 84 of 1996 exempts only parents that are financially unable to afford to pay such school fees. Parents who want to apply for exemption must complete the prescribed exemption forms and provide documentary proof as requested by the Governing Body and as stated on the exemption forms. Please, note that such documentation from both parent(s) and/or guardian(s) must accompany the application.  The Governing Body also requests parents/guardians who are exempted to immediately advise the school as soon as their financial position improves and they are able to pay school fees. The Governing Body further requests parents/guardians who received exemption to submit documentary proof confirming that their financial position has remained unchanged during the first week of the second, third and fourth terms respectively. Such documentary proof includes proof of all income and/or a sworn affidavit as well as bank statements. All information will be treated confidentially.

    INDEMNITY FORM
  • I, the undersigned being the parent or legal guardian of the learner enrolled at Ferdinand Postma High School, do hereby authorise the transportation to and from and participation of the learner enrolled in extramural activities, school tours, and SETH-activities.

    I accept that all reasonable precautions will be taken for the safety and welfare of my child and his/her property as any parent/guardian would do under the same circumstances during the period of transportation and participation in the aforementioned activities.  I cede my powers as parent/guardian to the Principal or his representative should any treatment be deemed necessary for my child, and I accept that I shall be held fully responsible for the costs incurred from any such treatment.  I, furthermore do hereby indemnify and absolve the Department of Education, North West, NWU and Ferdinand Postma High School from any claims regarding damage and any legal expenses or injury that may arise as a result of my child being transported to/from and/or participating in the said activity.

    Lastly, I agree to give heed to the regulations set in place by the school and the North West Department of Education regarding the COVID-19 pandemic and will abide by the rules and regulations referred to.
