After Treatment: You and your child will remain in the office until your child is awake, alert, can sit up unaided, and move with minimal assistance.
Because we used local anesthetic to numb your child’s mouth during the procedure, your child may accidentally bite or chew his/her lips, cheeks and/or tongue. Your child may also rub or scratch the face after treatment. Therefore, please observe your child very carefully after treatment. This danger exists for 2 to 3 hours after treatment.
Your child should experience only minor discomfort, if any as a result of the treatment. A small amount of bleeding from the gums around the teeth that were fixed or removed is normal and should stop within 24 hours.
Returning home: Your child must be supervised by a responsible parent or legal guardian. Please observe your child for any breathing difficulty. Carefully secure your child in a car seat or by seatbelt during transportation
Activities: Do not plan or permit activities for your child for the remainder of the day. Rest should be encouraged.
Drinking/Eating Following Treatment: Be sure that your child starts to drink fluids immediately after you leave the office. This will prevent dehydration. Begin with water. You can then add in clear liquids like apple juice or ginger ale. Feed your child a normal diet when he or she is ready, but wait at least two hours until the numbness from the local anesthetic has disappeared.
Temperature Elevation: Your child’s temperature may be elevated to 101 degrees F / 38 degrees C for the first 24 hours after treatment. Give Tylenol or Motrin/Advil every 3 to 4 hours and encourage drinking, to alleviate this condition
