Dear Neighbors,
As part of her budget for the City, the Mayor proposed a number of investments in public safety. These investments are opposed by some on the Board of Supervisors and without our voices are at risk of being cut. The plan includes funding for 220 new police officers and 22 new SFPD civilian positions to perform administrative duties which help get more sworn officers on our streets. Funding will also go toward support for the District Attorney’s Office, more park rangers for our public open spaces and plazas as well as continued investment in our street response teams available 24/7 to help those struggling with behavioral health, addiction, and homelessness that benefit from a non-police response.
Additionally, the proposed budget contains funding for a coordinated city effort led by the Department of Emergency Management to shut down the City’s open-air drug markets. This effort will focus on three key areas: open drug sales, public drug use, and illegal fencing of stolen goods in the drug market areas. As part of this effort, the SFPD will be partnering with the Sheriff’s Office and the DA to coordinate multi-pronged strategies to combat crime and increase public safety.
Without these investments, we will lose police hours and stop progress on our goal to shut down the City’s open-air drug markets.
Tell the supervisors to fully fund these critical public safety expenditures! Send an email today!
