I hereby authorize and give my consent for County Line Veterinary Clinic to perform acupuncture procedures on my pet. I understand that acupuncture is considered an alternative treatment in the state of Texas and that it will only be performed by a licensed veterinarian. I am aware that TCVM (Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine) will be the primary method for diagnosing and treating my pet during acupuncture sessions; however, conventional (Western) medicine will also be incorporated in order for my pet to receive a complete diagnosis and treatment plan. I understand that if further diagnostics are indicated they will be discussed with and offered to me.
I understand that acupuncture treatment consists of dry needles, electroacupuncture (needles with electric stimulation), aqua-acupuncture (injecting small amounts of fluid into acupuncture points), and moxibustion (heat applied to acupuncture needles). I also realize that herbal formulas and tui-na massage might be utilized in certain situations, especially if my pet will not tolerate needle placement. I recognize that acupuncture is considered very safe; however, possible side effects might include (but are not limited to) soreness, bruising, mild bleeding at the needle insertion sites, and broken needles. I have been made aware that it is possible for my pet to feel more lethargic following an acupuncture treatment. I also am aware that it might take a few days for me to see a positive effect following acupuncture treatment.
I am aware that, like all medical or surgical therapies, my pet might not immediately respond to acupuncture, might not respond at all, or might seem worse before he or she improves. I understand that if my pet shows no improvement after 5-8 sessions then acupuncture might not be an effective treatment and other options should be considered.
I have been informed that in certain conditions, such as arthritis or lameness, diagnostic imaging (i.e. radiographs) may be strongly recommended prior to acupuncture treatment. I am also aware that acupuncture sessions are a separate appointment from conventional diagnostics and therapies (such as annual exams, vaccinations, blood draws, etc.).
