High Plains Fair Housing Center is seeking individuals to assist in the investigation of housing discrimination. Under federal law, it is illegal to discriminate against people in housing transactions due to their race, skin color, national origin, religion, sex, disability, or familial status. In ND, it is unlawful to discriminate due to marital status, age, or receipt of public assistance. In South Dakota, ancestry and creed are also protected.
Uncovering and stopping illegal acts of discrimination requires testing, which is an investigative tool used to gather evidence. “Testers" pose as prospective renters or buyers of real estate for the purpose of gathering evidence that may reveal acts of discrimination. Comparing test experiences may make it possible to identify and document any differences in treatment and/or the existence of policies or practices that violate fair housing laws.
