If the cats you are reporting are outside of our service area, visit spaycalifornia.org for more resources. There are often groups similar to ours in your area that can assist you. You can find these groups online, or by searching on Facebook, or by asking any number of the pet/rescue groups in your area.

We can only assist with cats within our service area, so if you fill out our form and are not in our service area, you will not receive a response from us. Thank you for understanding.

Here is how our process works!

    Please read this part!

In order for us to help more people, we will loan you traps, show you how to use them, and you would do the trapping and transporting to and from our Clinic in Chico. This allows us to help several people at once, vs. doing the trapping ourselves, one location at a time.

Trapping cats is relatively easy! We will show you everything you need to know and guide you along the way.

Neighborhood Cat Advocates practices Trap-Neuter-Return. This means the cats are returned to the location where they were trapped. We will only work on private property with permission from property owners. Except in specific circumstances such as kittens that can be socialized and adopted out, we do not rehome, relocate, or adopt out cats. We will require that you sign a permission form stating that you give us permission to return the cats after spay/neuter surgery.

If you do not agree to allow the cats to be returned after spay/neuter surgery, we will be unable to help you.

    EAR TIPS ARE REQUIRED

All cats spayed/neutered by Neighborhood Cat Advocates and PawPrints Spay/Neuter Clinic will be ear tipped. NO EXCEPTIONS.

If you fill out our form and say 'Yes' to an ear tip, but refuse an ear tip at our Clinic, we will refer you to our voucher program for assistance. Our Clinic is for strays and ferals only, so refusing an ear tip will only convince us that the cats you are bringing in are not stray nor feral, and therefore are not eligible for our program.

Hit 'Next' for more information about ear tips.

Please read these ear tip FAQ's:

    What is an ear tip?

An ear tip is the removal of the very tip of the cat's ear while they are under anesthesia. The removal of the tip of the ear is not painful and does not do any harm to the cat. It is not "butchering". It is not "cruel". It is not any of the things you might think it is.

Why do you require ear tips on all cats?

An ear tip provides visual confirmation that the cat has already been spayed/neutered, so if the cat is accidentally re-trapped, they can be released immediately. An ear tip prevents the risk of the cat going through anesthesia again. An ear tip will prevent the cat from taking a spay/neuter appointment away from another cat that needs to be spayed or neutered. An ear tip can help prevent the cat from being trapped and dumped by a disgruntled neighbor. These are just some of the many reasons why we require ear tips. It is a small price to pay for a lifetime of freedom and happiness.

Even if I found the cat outside and now the cat will live inside only, do you still require an ear tip?

Yes. And also, this means you, or the person you adopt this cat to, now 'owns' this cat, which means you should not be using using our program as a resource. Please visit our voucher program's website and request a spay/neuter voucher to use at an appointment at another vet.

Here is an example of an ear tip:

Thanks for filling out our online form so far. We require that all cats that are spayed/neutered through our program be ear-tipped, so we will be unable to assist you at this time.

If you are requesting no ear tip because you are needing to spay/neuter your own animal, please visit our voucher program's website for more information.

NCA's cost to spay/neuter a cat averages approximately $150-200 a cat. Due to lack of veterinary appointments available to us in this community, we have opened our own spay/neuter clinic. Because of this, it has become necessary for us to request a copayment for each cat within a colony. We understand that you may not be able to make a copayment that covers the entire spay/neuter cost, so we are happy to discuss options with you. You will not be refused if you cannot afford the copay.

Our copayment amount is $40 per cat (male or female). If the cat is seen at our clinic (PawPrints Spay/Neuter Clinic), the copayment includes:

    • Spay/Neuter
    • FVRCP Vaccine
    • Rabies Vaccine
    • Flea Treatment
    • Microchip
    • Earmite/Dewormer (if earmites/worms seen during exam only)

In order for trapping to be successful, the cats need to be fed regularly leading up to the trapping date. This gets the cats used to a feeding schedule so that when we are ready to trap, you can pull the food. Pulling the food ensures that they will be hungry and willing to enter the trap. If you are not actively feeding the cats, we won't be able to help you.

PLEASE NOTE: We may not get to you and your cats for at least a few weeks. If you can, please make arrangements with other vets to get your stray/feral cats spayed/neutered. After you fill out our form, you'll receive an automated email with more information on how to get help sooner, including borrowing traps from us if you've made appointments elsewhere.

Please be patient - we are run entirely by volunteers and are working tirelessly to get through everyone on our list.
