  •  A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DISABILITY SUPPORT WORKER

This qualification reflects the role of workers in a range of community settings and clients’ homes, who provide training and support in a manner that empowers people with disabilities to achieve greater levels of independence, self-reliance, community participation and well-being. Workers promote a person-centred approach, work without direct supervision and may be required to supervise and/or coordinate a small team. A disability support worker would develop and implement programs to support clients to maximise their independence and develop skills and competencies. They also may facilitate outings and engagements with the community around them from facilitating a client's visit to the supermarket to their regular trips to their recreational activity of choice, all the way to helping them stay connected with lifelong friends and relatives. They may be required to work evenings, weekends and rostered shifts. They need to also be on the lookout for any safety hazards that may pose risks to themselves, other staff and their clients. In addition, they also must know how to use equipment such as hoists to lift the client in and out of bed, or swivel cushions to ease movement for the client. They may also utilise special communication technologies, such as software that produces spoken output for people with hearing difficulties, and magnifies or presents information as Braille for those with sight disabilities. A disability support worker may also need to be familiar with vehicle modifications such as wheelchair hoists and modified driving controls. They also need to be able to provide emotional support and companionship to their clients.
