What We Stand For
Why do you exist? Many companies can’t answer that question. At New City Plumbing (NCP), we asked this of ourselves. We’re convinced that the direction of any company is largely related to how this is answered. For this reason, we made answering it a priority.
In our research, we identified a few good reasons that people start companies: we discovered that some people want to leave a legacy for their family; other people enjoy the challenge of entrepreneurship and are naturally skilled for the task; and some companies are created to solve problems in the world. These are noble things and represent some of our reasons too.
We also identified two other reasons: for some, they are lured by the freedom and control that owning a business provides; for others, they are interested in the financial gains that owning a business can secure. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with either of these reasons, we don’t think that these are the best reasons to start a company. At NCP, we’re motivated by other factors.
Why does NCP exist? At NCP, we believe that work is good. In the beginning of time, work was given as a gift to the first humans. They were given creative work and oversight. Their work mattered. Work was not just a means to an end. Instead, work was part of purposeful life.
For much of history, humans lived in agrarian cultures and children worked alongside their parents. Everyone contributed to the good of the community. Work was not something that existed outside of a person's community. Instead, the community worked together for the good of one another. We view work similar to this.
It’s all too common for people to loathe their jobs and view work as a necessary evil that funds what we really love to do. And yet, that’s not what work should be about. For us, that’s not how we view the work that we do.
At NCP, we believe that work still matters. People spend the greater part of their lives with coworkers, on job sites, and doing work. Similar to the values of agrarian communities in the past, we view our company as a place where people work for the common good of one another. This doesn’t mean that we aren’t concerned with being profitable. Instead, we believe the most successful companies profit when they do the most good.
Mission Statement
To be the trusted and preferred contractor for generations to come.
The New City Way
Invest in People
At New City Plumbing we prioritize relationships. We know that a job costs what it costs. We don’t aim to be the cheapest in the industry. Rather, we aim to be the industry’s trusted choice. Since relationships matter to us, we prioritize our teams.
Internally, we’re more concerned with finding the right people than filling positions. We want our employees and subcontractors to thrive and enjoy their work. This is beneficial to our employees, to the company, and to our clients. Positions can be filled; people can’t be replaced.
Similarly, client relationships are essential to our success. We strive to maintain an open line of communication with our clients in order to deliver the best possible product in a timely manner. When our clients are happy, so are we. Relationships that last secure the future of an organization.
Do Good and Meaningful Work
The work we do represents who we are as a company. We want to be proud of what we do. We know that not all work is fun. However, doing good work is meaningful. The work you do is a representation of you.
We also know that meaningful work makes work less menial and makes life more enjoyable. For this reason, doing things the right way is the best way. We value continued education for our employees, we’re concerned with quality as much as quantity, and we’re committed to owning our mistakes and working to minimize them.
No company is perfect. However, every company can strive to do well.
Be Generous
At New City Plumbing, we believe that generosity is better than greed. The greatest people are the ones that do good for others. Greed has a way of corrupting and ruining things.
From a business perspective, we’re convinced that greed is foolish. Relationships are the key to success. If greed ruins relationships, it also limits the potential of an organization.
For this reason, generosity is core to who we are as a company. We want to be known for our generosity and we’re committed to doing meaningful work in the world. We strive to be generous wherever we have a presence.
