    ISPOR SA Data Grant Project Briefing Document

    The ISPOR SA Data Grant Project is an initiative aimed at advancing research in the field of Health Economics and Outcomes Research (HEOR). This project aims to connect HEOR researchers with data providers, enabling researchers to access valuable healthcare data resources for their studies. By facilitating this collaboration, ISPOR SA hopes to foster impactful research, promote data-driven insights, and contribute to the enhancement of healthcare strategies and interventions.

    Application Submission

    • Submit proposals in English via the Online Submission Portal below.
    • Format: Study Background, Problem Statement, Aim & Objectives, Study Timeline, Outline of Data required.
    • Only online submissions will be considered.
    • Applicants can choose from a list of data providers featured in the application form below, according to the relevance of the provider’s dataset to the research study being conducted. The selected data providers will consider your application.

    Application Review

    • Proposals will be reviewed by the ISPOR SA Scientific Committee, as well as the target data-providers as indicated in your application.
    • The timeline for review may vary from data-provider to data-provider. To follow-up on application progress, kindly contact the ISPOR SA office.
    • Applicants with access to comparative datasets such as public sector or research datasets are encouraged to apply. The decision-making committee will consider this as it may significantly enrich the study.

    Role of the Data Provider

    • If your application is successful with at least one data-provider, ISPOR SA will put you in contact. The data provider will offer access to relevant datasets.
    • Data Management & Support: The provider will ensure that the provided datasets are well-structured and usable. They also offer support for researchers seeking analytical insights from the datasets.
    • Data Privacy and Ethics: Collaborating parties take measures to ensure data privacy and ethical considerations. They de-identify data, adhere to privacy regulations, and respect ethical guidelines.

    Partnership Agreements and Project Timelines

    The agreements and project timelines for research conducted under the ISPOR SA Data Grant Project are determined by the partnering organisation (data provider) and the selected researcher(s). ISPOR SA does not participate in or influence the terms of the collaboration between the researcher and data provider. The partnering organisation and researchers are responsible for negotiating and finalising all aspects of their agreement, including data access arrangements and project timelines. Clear and open communication between both parties is vital during this process to establish mutual understanding and expectations. ISPOR SA’s role is limited to facilitating the initial connection between data providers and researchers, empowering them to establish mutually agreeable terms and project schedules for successful research execution.

  • Available Data Set Descriptions

    Mediclinic: Mediclinic Southern Africa (MCSA) dataset offers comprehensive healthcare information, encompassing patient demographics, insurance details, clinical diagnoses using ICD-10 codes, treatment procedures documented with CPT codes, medication records, lab results, vital signs, and healthcare encounters. Notable exclusions include the absence of ethnicity and level of education in patient demographics, and the lack of exact dosage and treatment duration information in medication records.

    Discovery Health: Discovery Health’s dataset spans more than 14 years and includes member‑level demographic information, clinical coding, and cost/utilisation data, offering both market intelligence and clinical insights. More details on scope, granularity & availability on request

    Medscheme: Medscheme collects member‑level data including demographic profiles, ICD‑10 coded clinical and pharmacy information, cost/utilisation trends, and wellness/biometric measures. More information on scope, format & availability on request

    Mediscor: Mediscor is an independent, accredited Pharmaceutical Benefit Management (PBM) company that facilitates real-time adjudication of medicine claims against sophisticated financial, clinical, and pharmaceutical utilisation rules customised to each client’s benefit design. Leveraging access to extensive claims and utilisation data across Southern Africa, Mediscor provides actionable, real-world insights into medicine use, patient adherence, cost drivers, and the effectiveness of healthcare funding strategies.
