ST TIMOTHY CATHOLIC PARISH (4/5)
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Discipline is an essential aspect of development. Its purpose in an educational setting is to
provide an environment conducive to learning, to educate students to an appreciation of the
importance of developing self-control and responsibility for their actions. Discipline works best
where the dignity of every person involved is respected. If a person is accused of wrongdoing
s/he will be informed of what s/he did that was wrong and will be given a chance to present
his/her side of the story. The age and maturity of the child will be taken into account in making
such an assessment.
The Diocese of San Diego guidelines regarding religious education classroom discipline (DCM
Guideline #22) requires that parents and students be informed of the parish's policy for behavior
standards prior to the beginning of the school year. Please go over the following guidelines with
your child and sign below. If you have any questions or concerns please do not hesitate to
contact Christine Avella, Director of Catechetical Ministry, at 760-489-1242.
1. Class Rules
- Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. No teasing or swearing.
- Electronic devices must be turned off & put away and may be used with instructor or Director's permission only. These include but are not limited to: laptop computer, tablet, cell phone, etc.
- Follow directions (including dress code) and participate in class.
- Possession and/or use of illegal substances will not be tolerated and will result in a call to the student's parent/guardian for immediate pickup.
2. Consequences for Broken Rules
- First consequence: warning from catechist
- Second consequence: meeting with catechist and/or Director
- Third consequence: if the problem persists a conference with the parents will be called and if no solution can be found then suspension from the program will be warranted.
**The consequences listed above are cumulative throughout the course of the year.**
It is absolutely forbidden for any disciplinary measure to involve personal indignities,
humiliation, indiscriminate punishment, sending students outside the classroom without adult
supervision, or corporal punishment of any kind.
I have read the Disciplinary Guidelines as stated above and agree to abide by them.
