Background

"The Apple Scholars in AI/ML PhD fellowship was created to recognize and support PhD students in Computer Science and related areas who are pursuing research in artificial intelligence and machine learning, with a unique focus on work that is related to Apple’s core values."

Recipients receive tuition, generous stipend and a travel grant for two (2) years as well as internship opportunities.

Eligibility

Candidates must…

1. …be enrolled full time at the start of Fall 2024 and expect to be enrolled through the end of the 2024/2025 academic year
2. …be in the last 2-3 years of their PhD program
3. …NOT hold any other industry-sponsored full fellowship while they are an Apple Scholar (Fall 2024 to Summer 2026)

Apple has encouraged the nomination of students who "identify as a member of a traditionally underrpresented group in the technology industry" which they consider to be "those who identify as Black, Hispanic, Native American, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander...women and non-binary individuals."

Apple requests that applicants select up to two technical areas from the list below that are most relevant for their work.  More details on technical areas are provided in the following document (extracted from the larger set of guidelines sent to invited universities).

Application Packet

Prepare and upload your application packet as a single PDF document according to the requirements and in the order outlined below:

1. Cover Page with the following:
   • Full Name, email address and phone number
   • Academic department and college
   • Apple research area (see below for more details)
   • Research Project Title
   • Research Abstract (200 word maximum)
2. Research statement covering past work and proposed direction for the next two years, clearly stating the hyopothesis and expected contributions to the chosen research area. - 5 page maximum, including citations, in a legible font size
3. Two (2) letters of recommendation, including one from your current advisor - 1 page maximum per letter -- Students are strongly encouraged to inquire about letters as soon as possible.  Letters must be included with the full application submission. 
4. Student CV and publication list.
