Courses SLU Will Consider for Reimbursement
SLU's external tuition reimbursement commitments are made specifically to strengthen the quality of teaching and learning in 1818 Program courses by approved 1818 faculty. More specifically, non-SLU graduate-level courses will be considered for reimbursement:
- if they are part of a master's or doctoral degree not offered at SLU; and
- if they are part of a master's or doctoral degree to which the 1818 instructor has been formally admitted; and
- if they are part of a master's or doctoral degree predominantly focused on the disciplinary or interdisciplinary academic content of the 1818 course(s) the 1818 instructor has been approved to offer.
Courses taken as part of a degree program predominantly focused on curriculum and instruction generally, and courses in educational administration, are not eligible for reimbursement.
Determination of the applicability of the proposed non-SLU graduate course is the purview of the approprate SLU 1818 Faculty Liaison.
Deadlines for Reimbursement Requests
Requests for external tuition reimbursement must be submitted by the following deadlines:
- For courses to be taken in a Fall term: August 15
- For courses to be taken in a Spring term: December 1
- For courses to be taken in a Summer term: May 1
How Reimbursement Works
- 1818 approved faculty member completes tuition reimbursement request by stated deadline.
- 1818 Advanced College Credit Program Office notifies approved faculty member of decision regarding tuition reimbursement request within 10 business days.
- At the conclusion of the course, 1818 faculty member submits:
- An invoice showing an itemized breakdown of the tuition and fees
- Proof of payment in the form of a credit card statement showing the charge; a bank statement showing the charge; or both sides of a canceled check. These are the only valid forms of proof of payment according to the University Business Office
- An official transcript showing the grade assigned for the course
Once all items above are received, 1818 Program Office submits within 5 business days tuition reimbursement request to the SLU Business Office for payment.
In order to receive reimbursement, all documents must be received within 90 days of the completion of the course.
Credit Limits
SLU will reimburse selected 1818 faculty for a maximum of 6 credit hours of graduate coursework per academic year defined by SLU as summer (preceding term), fall, and spring terms. In combination with scholarships for graduate credit earned at SLU, the total number of courses may not exceed this 6 credit hour limit.
Financial Limits
SLU caps reimbursement of approved graduate coursework at non-SLU colleges and universities at $1500 per 3-credit hour course or $3000 in total for one academic year.
No Non-Tuition Fees Reimbursed
The 1818 Program graduate tuition reimbursement does not cover any fees or charges associated with courses/enrollment that are not explicitly identified as tuition by the offering institution; it is the responsibility of the individual to pay these costs.
Potential Taxable Income
The recipient should be aware that the dollar value of this tuition reimbursement may become taxable income, per the Internal Revenue Service. The University is not obliged to nor shall withhold taxes from this award.
