  • Who we are:

    Buffalo's Breastfeeding Sisters is our peer support program for African American women. Our goal is to help promote and increase the number of African American women breastfeeding in Erie & Niagara counties. The program promotes the normalcy of breastfeeding in the African American community. 

    Job Summary: 

    Our mission is to create a safe space for African American women to receive non-judgmental, culturally relevant support during their breastfeeding journey. As a Peer Lactation Counselor (PLC), you will play a key role in providing emotional support, education, and guidance to mothers who are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed, as well as helping to normalize breastfeeding in the African American community.

    Rate of Pay: 

    $17/hr

  • Key Responsibilities:

    • Provide one-on-one peer lactation support for mothers up to 24 months postpartum.
    • Contact clients within two days of birth and meet weekly before delivery to build rapport.
    • Follow up weekly with active clients to address questions and concerns.
    • Facilitate at least one virtual breastfeeding support group per month via Zoom (rotating schedule).
    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of client interactions.
    • Provide non-judgmental, evidence-based breastfeeding support.
    • Attend and complete all Peer Lactation Counselor training modules.
    • Participate in monthly team meetings to discuss client progress and share experiences.
    • Help normalize breastfeeding and dispel myths in the African American community.

    Qualifications:

    • Must have breastfed for at least 6 months within the last 5 years.
    • Open availability to provide phone or virtual lactation support.
    • Experience in mentoring, maternal health, or group facilitation is a plus.
    • A passion for breastfeeding advocacy and reducing health disparities is essential.
    • Commitment to attend a monthly meeting with the peer supervisor to review client progress, and discuss challenges and successes.
    • Must have a valid email address for communication.

    Additional details:

    • Scholarship provided for Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) training after one year of service.
    • Compensation for meeting program expectations and client contacts.
