Let’s Explore Fall! (September - November)
During the indoor component of the fall field investigation, children will observe a live box turtle and learn about its unique physical and behavioral adaptations. Outdoors, they’ll notice plants moving into winter dormancy and search the woods of River Legacy Parks for places that a box turtle and other woodland animals (squirrels, skunks, owls, raccoons) might make their homes, find their food, hide from a predator, or raise their young. Additional activities – indoors and out - will provide young children with the opportunity to discover first-hand what these woodland animals do during the ever-shorter days of fall to prepare for the extremes of the winter months ahead.

Let’s Explore Spring! (March - May)
During the indoor component of the spring field investigation, children will observe a variety of River Legacy Park’s live, egg-laying animals and explore the similarities and differences among their amazing eggs. Outdoors, they’ll observe the renewal of plant life after winter dormancy and search our woods for birds’ nests, scan the pond – all the while hoping to catch a glimpse of the young animals that may have just emerged. Additional activities – indoors and out – will provide children with the opportunity to discover first-hand how these springtime babies are cared for by their parents or instinctively begin to fend for themselves.
