3rd-12th Grade Field Investigations Field Trip
Each two-hour Field Investigation is designed to be an authentic application of concepts covered in the classroom according to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Field Investigations include indoor and outdoor components, which allow students to further investigate, explore and observe the plants, animals and ecosystems they have studied.
Let’s Explore River Legacy Parks’ Woodland Habitats Field Investigation (3rd - 4th Grades; can be adapted for 5th - 6th Grades)
Within this field investigation there are two indoor components, a live animal observation and a lab investigation. The live animal observation compares and contrasts two native vertebrate animals, focusing on how their body structures and behaviors help them to survive in a woodland habitat. The lab component investigates an invertebrate from the forest floor ecosystem (usually a snail) and its role in the vital process of decomposition. Outdoors, students will walk the woodland trail, exploring the layers of the forest and looking for examples and evidence of animals and their habitats.
Minimum: 20 students
Maximum: 100 students (66 max. on Mondays)

Let’s Explore River Legacy Parks’ Freshwater Ecology Field Investigation (5th - 6th Grades; can be adapted for higher grade levels)
During the indoor component, students use microscopes to take a closer look at the invertebrates that are found in a water source and how these invertebrates indicate the health of the water. Outdoors, students use dip nets to explore and look for invertebrate organisms in the pond as well as perform a variety of tests that indicate the quality of the water. Students will also explore factors affecting water quality through an interactive watershed model demonstration.
Minimum: 20 students
Maximum: 60 students
