The YIG Lobbyist role requires a high level of self-direction, independence, maturity, and flexibility. Lobbyists will be assigned one of two or three lobbying firms. Each lobbyist in the firm will work with the firm to create a list of YIG bills that the firm will lobby for or against. Lobbyists may speak in committees at the end of debate. Lobbyists may not speak in chambers, but instead will work outside the chambers - in the "lobby" - asking for legislators to come out of chambers to talk to them to discuss upcoming legislation. Lobbyists will track bills as they move through committee and chambers, and will report on their success of either having a bill passed or defeated. Lobbyists will work with Resource Staff, but will not have specific schedules telling them where to be. Instead, they will use the bill tracking system to see when and where bills they are working on are being debated in committees and chambers. When lobbyists are working in support of a bill, it is expected that they work with the bill authors to ensure that they are providing accurate and useful information. If lobbyists are working to defeat a bill, they are encouraged to work with Party Leaders to coordinate messaging.
