Elected Positions and Descriptions
Youth Governor - Must be in 7th this year. The Youth Governor works with Y staff and volunteers to help plan and oversee the program and conference. Will select a staff of up to 6 students who will help Youth Governor study bills submitted by students and determine a legislative agenda. The Youth Governor's staff may speak in committees on bills that the Youth Governor supports or opposes, although the Youth Governor may not speak in committees or chambers. The Youth Governor will sign or veto all bills that are passed through committees and chambers. The Youth Governor gives a three-minute speech at the Opening Convocation, and gives a three-minute speech at Closing Convocation. The Youth Governor should strongly support the mission of the YMCA Youth in Government program.
Lt. Governor - can be in 6th or 7th grade this year. Lt. Governor serves as Youth Governor in the event the Youth Governor is unable to serve. Presides over the Senate chambers. Is trained and able to use parliamentary procedure to manage debate in chambers. Must have strong speaking skills, strong leadership skills, and ability to maintain order in a chamber/room.
Speaker of the House - can be in 6th or 7th grade this year. Presides over the House chambers. Is trained and able to use parliamentary procedure to manage debate in chambers. Must have strong speaking skills, strong leadership skills, and ability to maintain order in a chamber/room.
